Our Castle Rock Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program builds focus, confidence, and self-defense in a structured, supportive room. Classes are split by age and experience so every kid is challenged at the right level — first-timers through competitors.

Before he was a software engineer, Derek McCracken taught special education. He came to jiu jitsu the long way round — 23 years and a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, then one class at Castle Rock that changed the plan — and runs the kids program here with Mikey Hernandez. He is a brown belt, promoted by Derek Alumbaugh. The person at the front of that room has taught children for a living.

Your First Class

What to Expect on Day One

Your first class is free, and every part of it is built for someone who has never done this before.

What to wear & bring

Bring your child in comfortable clothes — we provide a loaner gi for the first class. A water bottle is all they need.

What happens in class

The first class is free. A coach who knows how to make a nervous first-timer feel at home pairs your child with a friendly partner and walks them through the basics. Parents watch from the side.

No experience? You belong here

No experience is needed to start. Most kids walk in never having grappled, and the room is built to welcome them from day one.

A 23-year Tae Kwon Do black belt who came to jiu jitsu to teach his own students and fell for it, Derek leads Castle Rock's adult and kids BJJ. "How you do anything is how you do everything."

Mikey has coached Castle Rock's kids jiu jitsu since 2021 — a purple belt under Derek Alumbaugh, and a father of three girls himself. He found the place from a desk job that was missing something and never stopped. “Courage isn't the absence of fear.”
