What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — and Why Train It?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art built on leverage and technique over size and strength — which is exactly what makes it so effective for self-defense. Most real-world confrontations end up on the ground, and BJJ teaches you to stay calm and stay in control there.

It's also one of the best workouts and problem-solving games you'll ever do. Whether you're training for fitness, self-defense, competition, or simply to challenge yourself, Jiu-Jitsu builds cardio, mental sharpness, and real resilience — with no experience needed to start.

FAQ

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — Your Questions Answered

Everything people ask before their first class. Still unsure? Just show up — a coach will walk you through it.

Why train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches leverage and technique over size and strength, making it one of the most effective martial arts for real self-defense. Because most confrontations end up on the ground, BJJ prepares you to stay in control. Whether you train for fitness, competition, or confidence, it builds mental sharpness, cardio, and resilience.

What will my first class look like?

After you sign up, our team schedules a 30-minute orientation before your first Fundamentals class. You’ll learn the basics — a little BJJ history, how to bow onto the mat, and key positions — then join the class for warm-ups and drilling with a partner. No experience? No problem. Our coaches guide you every step of the way.

Is Jiu-Jitsu safe?

Yes. Your safety is our priority. A structured curriculum keeps training controlled, especially for beginners, and our culture of respect means you learn in a safe, supportive environment with expert instructors — improving your fitness and confidence as you go.

Do I have to compete?

Not at all. Competing is encouraged but never required at Easton — you train at your own pace. For those who want to test their skills, the Easton Open, our in-house tournament, is a great first experience in a fun, supportive environment before stepping into larger events. Train for yourself, for competition, or for life.

What makes Easton's Jiu-Jitsu different?

Easton Training Center has been Colorado’s Jiu-Jitsu pioneer since 1998. Founded by Professor Amal Easton, a Renzo Gracie black belt, our academy has produced over 100 black belts and trains competitors at all levels, from local tournaments to professional MMA.

Which Easton academies offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

All nine: Arvada, Boulder, Castle Rock, Centennial, Denver, Littleton, Longmont, Lowry, and Thornton. Your membership gives you access to every academy, so you can train wherever is convenient.

Does Easton offer Jiu-Jitsu for kids?

Yes. Our Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program runs at all nine academies for ages 4–13, helping kids build confidence, discipline, and self-defense skills in a fun, supportive environment.

What should I wear to my first class?

Just bring comfortable athletic clothing — we’ll provide a Gi for you to borrow. Avoid clothing with zippers, and bring a water bottle. Once you sign up, you’ll get your own Gi to train in. Come ready to learn, train, and have fun.
