One Day at a Time: the Rhythm of Process

One Day at a Time: the Rhythm of Process

It’s easy to get discouraged when we don’t see instant results. Our society has trained us to believe that instant gratification is the norm. If we don’t feel good about something, we move on; we try something new.

In some ways, listening to our bodies and following the path of least resistance can be good. If a rip tide drags you out to sea, fighting it will only make things worse. You have to relax and let it happen. Eventually you swim sideways out of it, and back to shore. Here, the path of least resistance works.

Life, however, doesn’t always look so black and white. There’s a whole range of color in between, and while not all challenges are life-threatening, they do test our commitment and resolve.

Embrace the heat

When you chose to start a sport like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai, you aren’t just buying a title or throwing a shiny new badge on your vest. You’re packing your bags to embark on a long, tumultuous journey of self-discovery.

You won’t learn just techniques; you’ll go deeper than you may ever have, to layers of yourselves you never thought you’d see. It won’t always look pretty.

Some days, you may feel great. Others, you’ll want to rip your hair out and scream. But just like with everything — these moments will pass. Enjoy the good days, bask in the great days, and know that the awful ones will end and you’ll begin again.

Without the lows, we’d never appreciate the highs, and if everything felt easy, we wouldn’t grow.

[What to Say if Your Kids Lose Their Match]

Focus on the evolution

How many times have you seen a toddler fall while learning how to walk? They may cry, but they try again. One day, they may be cutting flips or running marathons. Nobody just voluntarily feet up and says, “Wellllp, too bad that whole walking thing didn’t work out. I think I’ll just crawl around forever.”

It’s our nature to evolve — to continue and continue until we get where we want to go. (Have you ever seen a determined toddler crawling at light speed?)

As fully developed adults, or even kids with good guidance, we’re lucky for the opportunities that show us both our strengths and our weaknesses. When we don’t get that instant gratification of success, we may be forced to face ourselves at a new level.

“The mat doesn’t lie” has become an expression for a reason. It hold up a mirror to us, from good days to bad — much like a partner or family member that sees us at our best and our worst.

When we commit to ourselves and to the journey, we don’t chose easy; we chose truth.
