Move of the Week 3/26 – Kimura and Knee To Stomach

Move of the Week for 3/26 – This week, Professor Easton demonstrates a fantastic series of moves and techniques. Last week, we covered defending the rear bear hug, so this week we defend from the front. We also have a couple of great ground combos and a standing hip throw.

Fundamentals:

Front Bear Hug Defense

The defense against the front bear hug is pretty simple. Three steps and your opponent ends up on his back. Practice the steps until they’re fluid. And don’t spread your legs too much. If you’re rigid, you can’t respond to your opponents movements.

Guard Attack Kimura / Fan Sweep / Guillotine

Professor Easton demonstrates a couple of great drills here. Getting your hips to move fluidly and quickly will bring great success in jiu jitsu. For the fan sweep, it’s important to grab your opponent’s arm and pin it as Professor Easton says. That’s one of the reasons the sweep works so well. Using his belt to lift you up in the beginning of the sweep is just smart jiu jitsu. Let your opponent do all the work.

Intermediate:

Knee to Stomach Movement/Attacks (3 chokes)

The knee to stomach is one of the most effective techniques you can learn. It’s uncomfortable for your opponent, and can make your life a lot easier. It’s key that you plant it in the right spot, however. You know you got it right when you have a good base. Your opponents sudden lack of breath is another tip off.

Hip Throw

Notice how Professor Easton securely grabs his opponents collar to drag him forward. This will allow you to keep him moving forward and off balance when you go to throw him. Notice how Professor Easton doesn’t quite face away from the opponent entirely. You shouldn’t either. You’re trying to get your opponent over your hip, not shoulder.

Every week, we post our jiu jitsu technique videos that demonstrate the maneuver and skills you would learn while studying jiu jitsu at Easton BJJ. If you would like to learn jiu jitsu in Highlands Ranch, Littleton, Denver or any of our other locations, contact us today.
