Fundamentals – Grip Strips and Basic Armbar

  • Grip Strips – Grip fighting is the first wave of offense we have to deal with against an opponent that is looking to grab ahold of us to execute a takedown or throw. If you are unsure of how to handle the grips, don’t miss this class! We will be breaking down how to deal with various grips (gi and no gi), in order to make sure that you are the one who wins the grip fight, and gets the takedown!
  • Armbar – Closed guard is not the best place to be in a fight. However, if you have some understanding of what to do to attack, you could actually have a huge advantage. The armbar is a great way to attack from what should be a bad spot. We will look at a couple of ways to set up the armbar. One slower and more methodical, and one that is a quick set up! See you in class!

Intermediate – Shot Defense and Side Control

  • Shot Defense – There are many “basic” takedowns that people will attempt. It is important to understand how to shut down these attempts. There are techniques that take the move and stop it completely, giving us the opportunity to start our own attack. There are also some that reverse the situation, putting the attacker on the defense pretty quickly. Come in and learn some of your instructor’s favorite takedown defenses and counters!
  • Maintaining Side Control to Advance to Mount – We will cover how to maintain this position, as well as how to go from here to the mount, while keeping your opponent stuck on the bottom. If you don’t learn how to do this correctly, you may rush, allowing your opponent some space to escape. Come in and let us show you how to maintain and advance.

Kickboxing – Reloading, Posting, Framing, and Weight Distribution

One of the most fundamental principles of fighting is learning how to effectively use your weight to generate power in your strikes. This week, we will focus on transferring our weight properly between our lead leg and our rear leg while throwing strikes. We will also look at a technique called “reloading,” which allows us to throw the same-side strike two times in a row, with power. Once we learn to shift our weight properly, we will look at “posting” and “framing,” which are techniques used to control the opponent and create rhythm breaks in our attack patterns. These prove to be very useful and cause confusion to the opponent! Weight shifting will play a key role in your striking development, so pay attention this week and get some good repetitions in!

Muay Thai – Elbows

This week in Muay Thai we focus on elbows, one of the trickiest weapons to throw in a fight, but also one of the most rewarding. We will look at how to set our elbows up and how to safely close the distance from medium range to short/inside range to land our elbows. We will also study hand fighting and hand positioning techniques on the inside to allow us to land elbows from some sneaky positions.

Announcements

  • Best of skill to all of the ETC competitors heading out to NY on May 19th to do battle in the WKA Championships. The winners get to move on to International competition in Spain later this year, so lets be sure to send some positive vibes to these competitors while they’re there for the 4 day tournament!

Thoughts

Life moves on, whether we act as cowards or heroes. Life has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy, and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such
