BJJ

Fundamentals – Pummel

  • Pummel to Low Back Clench – Controlling the clench is controlling the match. This is where were can learn to control and take our partner to the mat.
  • Frame to Pummel Escape – This is the same movement from half guard. Learning how to frame and pummel on bottom of side control is massively important. Keeping the elbows in tight and avoiding the head wrap will help you avoid getting submitted and having the partner on top advance. Keep in mind that next week we will add in escapes from headlocks on the ground. These all tie in together.

Intermediate –

  • Sprawl – This week is sprawl. Students will begin by going through the basics of how to sprawl without a partner, this is also a good way to get their heart rate up. We’ll emphasize the importance of hitting the hips to the mat and getting up as quickly as possible. If everyone is doing great on their own they can start working on doing this when a partner shoots on them. We will spend a while on this technique and it is a good time to continue to working on their shots and wrestling stance.
  • Half-Guard Bottom – This is a super important position to learn how to control. Distance and framing is an absolute necessity in jiu jitsu and the half guard gives you a great starting point for these concepts.

Kickboxing – Teeps

This week in kickboxing, we will focus on using the teep, which translates to “foot jab” in Thai. The teep is a versatile weapon that can be used for range finding, disruption, off-balance your opponent, or setting up another attack. We will look at the mechanics of this kick then explore the different uses of the teep!

Muay Thai – Elbows and Inside Work

This week we will look at elbow technique and inside work in the Muay Thai classes! Elbows are a deadly and versatile weapon that can be used to cut or smash the opponent. We will look at a few different elbow variations, then we will look at applying these elbows. Setting them up to open up our opponent, closing the distance to land them successfully, and how to follow up once we have landed our strike. Elbows will almost always be thrown from inside the clinch or will lead to a clinch tie up, so we will also touch on clinch entries after throwing an elbow.

Healthy Lifestyles
We are a pretty unique place to train. On one side we have martial arts and self defense classes going on, and on the other we have fitness classes of many varieties taking place. The truth is, on both sides whether martial arts or fitness, we are very concerned with self-defense. Self-defense means much more than learning how to punch, kick, choke and armbar someone. Statistically speaking, most people are hurt or killed not by some violent attacker, but by heart disease, or some sort of health complication due to unhealthy lifestyles. All of you are here for a reason, and I would hedge my bets, that fitness and health is close to number 1 on everyone’s list. The reason we are here teaching is because we care about your goals, and we care about your health. We can come in and work with you for an hour a day and in that hour make great strides, but really, in the end, the food you’re eating and your habits outside the gym play an equally important role. Again, we consider ourselves a place where you can get in shape and learn some great self-defense skills, but the self-defense skills we strive to teach are more than just the martial arts. We want you to live better, eat better, and in general live healthier happier lives. If you guys ever need pointers on how to do this, please ask me or any of the other instructors because we are here to help!
