Summer Essay Contest Winners

The summer essay contest was a huge success, with 32 essays submitted! We feel very honored to have so many members of our community share their stories of how training martial arts has improved their lives. Students wrote about how training helped them overcome past trauma, find a community, or just find the best version of themselves. Thank you to everyone who shared their story! First Place: Nucleus – Maggy Stacy

A beautiful rendition of how the mentality the author learned through martial arts has helped her navigate some of the most emotionally difficult experiences in her life. (Read here)

Second Place: Psychiatry and Jiu Jitsu – Ronil Shah

A psychiatrist compares his struggles with jiu-jitsu to the stresses of his day job, and tells how training puts that stress into perspective. (Read here)

Third Place: The Gifts That Can’t Be Seen – Adam Nowicki

A jiu jitsu practitioner on the one time he used the skills he learned on the mat to defend himself in the street, though not in the way he expected! (Read here)
