Martial Arts Technique of the Week – Videos and Class Descriptions
BJJ
Fundamentals – Grip Strips and Armbar
- Grip Strips – One of the most important aspects of training in the kimono is grip fighting. In order for an opponent or attacker to effectively pin you or throw you, they must first obtain some sort of grips. If we spend the appropriate amount of time learning this part of the game, it should be extremely difficult for someone to mount an attack against you or throw you with any amount of confidence.
- Armbar from Closed Guard – The armbar is one of the most traditional types of locks utilized in grappling, a lock that works by hyperextending the elbow joint. This week we will focus on attacking the armbar from the closed guard.
Intermediate – Drills, Punch Defense to Side Clinch, Armbar and Triangle
- Punch Defense to Side Clinch – Remember, all intermediate classes start with a hard drilling session. This week focus on setting up the russian tie, the push/pull wrestling stance drill, the arm drag drill, defending punches with the side clinch, and transitioning from DLR to anaconda guard to 1 leg X-guard. - Armbar and Triangle from Closed Guard – On the ground, we are studying how to attack the technical armbar from the closed guard, and then how to transition to the triangle choke when our partner pulls their arm out of the armbar. Finish class with positional training from the closed guard.
Kickboxing – Teeps and Push Kicks
This week in kickboxing, we will focus on using the teep, which translates to “foot jab” in Thai. The teep is a versatile weapon that can be used for range finding, disruption, off-balance your opponent, or setting up another attack. We will look at the mechanics of this kick then explore the different uses of the teep!
Muay Thai – Specialized Footwork
This week in Muay Thai we will look at footwork from the Blue Ocean Muay Thai System. Their footwork and angles are tailored for the highest levels of kickboxing and Muay Thai. Switching, shifting, drop stepping, and Dutch Rush will all be options we explore this week. Get ready for some fancy footwork and angles of attack!

“Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are probably right.”
Our self-image, and how we appear to others, is largely predicated on how we speak and think about ourselves. If all we do is talk about how we “can’t do things” or how we “aren’t good at things,” then we will never be able to do things, or do them well because of our own self-imposed limitations. When you impose limitations on yourself, and you identify with failure, then you will welcome failure. Conversely, if you identify with power and success, you will welcome success. Basically, how we speak of ourselves and the language we use, becomes our self-fulfilling prophecy.
