BJJ

Fundamentals – Headlock Defense

  • Standing Headlock Defense – Getting punched in the face while in a headlock is a dangerous place to be. In a self-defense situation we need to know how to keep from eating too many punches, and how to get to a safer position.
  • Headlock Escapes – We touched on these techniques a few weeks ago, but this week we will go straight to the ground and look at using the pendulum, hooking the leg to push, then pull, hooking the head and turning to all fours in order to defend the headlock on the ground. Don’t despair; the above video will make this easy to understand.

Intermediate – Drills, Side Clinch Trip, Passing Closed Guard

  • Side clinch trip backwards – Remember, all intermediate classes start with a hard drilling session. This week focus on setting up the russian tie, the push/pull wrestling stance drill, the arm drag drill, post drill to the side clinch and tripping our opponent backwards, and transitioning from DLR to anaconda guard to 1 leg X-guard. Please watch the video below for a detailed look at these drills.
  • Passing Closed Guard – On the ground, we are studying passing the closed guard. Students will stand in the closed guard controlling the sleeve, break the guard, and pass by forcing half guard and hugging the head of their opponent. Finish class with positional training from closed guard.

Kickboxing – Elbows

This week in kickboxing, we will go over the short-range weapon in the elbow. The elbow can be used to “cut” or “speer” the opponent, depending on how you throw it. We will look at proper elbow technique and then how to properly set our elbows up and cover distance from punch range to elbow range.

Muay Thai – Leg Kick Defense and Counters

Last week in class we looked at low kick offense and set ups. This week we will flip the script and focus on defending low kicks and answering back. As with all kicks, there are several types of defense. We will drill checking, evading, receiving, intercepting, and catching.

The “Wall” and Getting Over it

Everybody, at some point in their workout program is going to hit the “wall.” Whether that means you’re feeling burned out, or you aren’t seeing the same rate of improvement, or you feel like you are plateauing…whatever the case may be, you are going to hit that wall at some point in your training. The trick is to be aware of it, and to understand that it’s natural for everyone. Getting over the wall, which all of you will do, is one of the most rewarding feelings you can have, and this obviously is not only true for our training, but also for our lives. Life is full of obstacles, and the most successful people are the ones who keep moving forward and deal with setbacks in stride. As far as our workouts are concerned, the way to get over it is to stay consistent, and to remember that you can always ask any of the instructors here for advice and guidance because getting over the wall is something we have all personally experienced. Again, it’s just necessary to understand that at some point all of us will hit the wall, but what’s important, and what really defines us, is that we have the indomitable spirit and the fortitude to get over it and forge ahead.
