Fundamentals – Punch Defense

  • Punch Defense from Standing – Let’s look at getting safe and closing the distance between us and our partner. We will be starting by taking our hands and blocking our partner’s hands. From here our partner can go for a swinging punch. As they circle out to punch, we block their bicep. Now our hands circle under the armpits and we will look to get a side clinch or lower back control.
  • Punch Defense from the Guard – Whether we are talking about sport jiu jitsu or self defense, making sure our partner is not postured up is really important. Let’s start by having the partner on top with their hands on the stomach of the partner on bottom. Partner on bottom will bring their hands under the partner on top’s wrist and swipe their hands out to the side. At the same time, they will pull forward with their legs. It’s really important to get your double under grips and flare your elbows out. If this is done correctly, they should not be able to strike you. From here you will be able to use your legs and hips to get towards the back.

Intermediate – Low Back Clench and Side Control Attacks

  • Low Back Clench – This is one of the best positions we can end up in while standing. Depending on what our partner does we will either shrug them forward and get the lower back clench, or if they are wide and staying in front of us, we will go for our outside trip or Tai Otoshi.
  • Americana, Reverse Armbar, Kimura Combo – When we get our opponents in a dominant position such as side control and we isolate the far arm, they only have so many ways to go. If they keep the structure of their framed arm, we will look at going for the Americana. If, as we go for our Americana, they straighten their arm, then we keep our same hand position and go for the straight arm lock. If they have gone from an Americana, to straight arm, to arm bent down towards the waist, we now need to change our grips for the Kimura. It’s the same figure four grip the whole time (just switching hands when they escape the straight armlock to grab toward their waist.

Kickboxing – Footwork and Creating Angles after Combinations

The goal of combat sports is to hit and not get hit! This week, we will focus on different ways of “stepping off the line” to avoid getting hit after we hit our opponents. A good rule of thumb is to step to the side you finish on. So, if you finish with your lead hand, step to your lead side. If you finish with your rear hand, exit to your rear side. This week, we drill the pivot step to the lead side and the slide step to our rear side. Get off the tracks!

Muay Thai – Kru Bob Seminar Review

We will spend the week reviewing the techniques from the Kru Bob seminars and work on implementing these tips and techniques into our own games. Come with any questions you have from the seminar as well!


Facing Failure and Setbacks
One of the most difficult barriers we face in athletics, business, and in life is the fear of failure. Failure and setbacks are an unavoidable and inevitable part of the journey towards success. The most successful people are the ones who possess a high tolerance for failure. Everyone has heard how Michael Jordan was moved to the JV squad his first year of high school, how Edison failed over 10,000 times before he succeeded in building the light bulb. Although, these stories are commonly told to inspire, the message is valid and important. If you have never failed at anything in your life, let me save you the suspense….you will eventually fail at something, and experience a setback of some kind. What is important is that from failure, you learn a lesson, and use what you learn from that lesson to move toward success. As Paulo Coelho says in his excellent book The Alchemist, “The trick to life is falling down seven times, and getting up eight.”
