Fundamentals – Pummel

  • Pummel to Low Back Clinch – Controlling the clinch is controlling the match. This is where we can learn to control and take our partner to the mat.
  • Frame to Pummel Escape – Learning how to frame and pummel on bottom of side control is massively important. Keeping the elbows in tight and avoiding the head wrap will help you avoid getting submitted and having the partner on top advance. Keep in mind that next week we will add in escapes from headlocks on the ground. These movements all tie in together.

Intermediate – Arm Drag and Scarf Hold Defense

  • Arm Drag – Arm drags are awesome ways to close the distance and take your opponent down. Timing, speed, and momentum play a huge part in the success of arm drag take downs, and we will show you how to set these up with confidence.
  • Scarf Hold Escape
    Much like the headlock, scarf holds can be devastating when done by the right individual. The important thing for us here is to know how to escape the scarf hold, and or turn it into a headlock, so we can escape without incident. If you are slow to act, you could very well find yourself getting submitted from this position.

Kickboxing – Body Punches and Changing Levels

This week in kickboxing, we look at the art of attacking the body. Learning how to properly punch your opponent’s midsection can add a new level to your offense! We will work on level changes, setting up the body shots, and proper follow ups after we land a devastating body punch.

Muay Thai – Clinch

Last week in class we focused on transitioning from Zone 2 (punch/kick range) in to Zone 1 (elbow/knee range). This week we will look at Zone 1 and clinch fighting. Clinch is an art in and of itself, so we will spend a lot of time getting comfortable inside and learning to attack and defend properly. Be ready for a sore neck this week!

Healthy Lifestyles

We are a pretty unique place to train. On one side we have martial arts and self defense classes going on, and on the other we have fitness classes of many varieties taking place. The truth is, on both sides whether martial arts or fitness, we are very concerned with self-defense. Self-defense means much more than learning how to punch, kick, choke and armbar someone. Statistically speaking, most people are hurt or killed not by some violent attacker, but by heart disease, or some sort of health complication due to unhealthy lifestyles. All of you are here for a reason, and I would hedge my bets, that fitness and health is close to number 1 on everyone’s list. The reason we are here teaching is because we care about your goals, and we care about your health. We can come in and work with you for an hour a day and in that hour make great strides, but really, in the end, the food you’re eating and your habits outside the gym play an equally important role. Again, we consider ourselves a place where you can get in shape and learn some great self-defense skills, but the self-defense skills we strive to teach are more than just the martial arts. We want you to live better, eat better, and in general live healthier happier lives. If you guys ever need pointers on how to do this, please ask me or any of the other instructors because we are here to help!
