Fundamentals – Single Leg and Guard Passing

  • Single-Leg Takedown – The single leg takedown (often shortened to single leg or single) involves grabbing one of the legs of the opponent, usually with both hands, and using the position to force the opponent to the ground. Typically, the lower part of the leg is pulled in one direction, while the torso or shoulder is used to press the body or upper part of the leg of the opponent in the other direction.
  • Guard Passing – Under – With this particular guard pass, we will focus on going under the opponent’s leg, as oppose to over, which we did recently. Having both sides of this pass (over and under) will greatly increase your effectiveness.

Intermediate – Double Leg and Guard Passing

  • Double-Leg Takedown – This week we will be going over one of the most effective takedowns from wrestling. This takedown is great for self-defense and competition, and can be utilized by smaller people against much larger opponents. If you can get in on your opponents hips, in good position and with good momentum, you should be able to make it happen!
  • Stand-Up Pass – Standing to pass can be extremely effective and it also greatly diminishes your opponents chances of submitting you. When you stand, you can put yourself in a much better situation and effectively pass your opponents guard.

Kickboxing – Knees

The knee in kickboxing is a very versatile and dangerous weapon. It can be thrown from mid-range as well as short-range, and can be thrown at a variety of targets. This week, we will examine the mechanics of a proper knee and how to hide our knees with other strikes in order to increase our chances of landing a fight ending knee!

Muay Thai – Switch Series/Dutch Rush

This week in the Muay Thai classes we will shift our focus to the Dutch Style of Kickboxing and look at the “switch series” and the “Dutch Rush” series as well. The switch series is a good way to create an angle and switch your lead side of offense on your opponent. We will use the Dutch Rush to close the pocket, cover ground, and chase a retreating opponent. Lots of footwork and boxing this week!
