9.4.2017 – 9.10.2017

BJJ

Fundamentals – Pummel

  • Pummel to Low Back Clinch – Controlling the clinch is controlling the match. This is where we can learn to control and take our partner to the mat.
  • Frame to Pummel Escape – Learning how to frame and pummel on bottom of side control is massively important. Keeping the elbows in tight and avoiding the head wrap will help you avoid getting submitted and having the partner on top advance. Keep in mind that next week we will add in escapes from headlocks on the ground. These movements all tie in together.

Intermediate – Drills, Front Headlock, Attack the Back

  • Front Headlock, Drills – Remember, all intermediate classes start with a hard drilling session. Please watch the video below for a detailed look at these drills: Front headlock takedown, bull fighter pass, frame escape, anaconda guard sweep, leg drag drill.
  • Attack the Back – On the ground, we are studying how to attack the back.

Kickboxing – Boxing and Body Punching

This week in kickboxing, we look at the art of attacking the body. Learning how to properly punch your opponent’s midsection can add a new level to your offense! We will work on level changes, setting up the body shots, and proper follow ups after we land a devastating body punch.

Muay Thai – Zone 1 Focus: Clinch and Grappling

This week we will focus on “Zone 1” attacks and clinch work. As we all know, clinch and grappling on the inside is an entirely separate game from punching and kicking at longer range. We will go over the fundamentals of clinch and positioning, as well as the basic offense, defense, and throws from the clinch. Don’t forget to take off your jewelry and take our your piercings before class this week. Also, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to bring a towel to dry off or a spare ranked shirt with you to class!

  • The “Wall” and Getting Over it Everybody, at some point in their workout program is going to hit the “wall.” Whether that means you’re feeling burned out, or you aren’t seeing the same rate of improvement, or you feel like you are plateauing…whatever the case may be, you are going to hit that wall at some point in your training. The trick is to be aware of it, and to understand that it’s natural for everyone. Getting over the wall, which all of you will do, is one of the most rewarding feelings you can have, and this obviously is not only true for our training, but also for our lives. Life is full of obstacles, and the most successful people are the ones who keep moving forward and deal with setbacks in stride. As far as our workouts are concerned, the way to get over it is to stay consistent, and to remember that you can always ask any of the instructors here for advice and guidance because getting over the wall is something we have all personally experienced. Again, it’s just necessary to understand that at some point all of us will hit the wall, but what’s important, and what really defines us, is that we have the indomitable spirit and the fortitude to get over it and forge ahead.
