BJJ

Fundamentals – Passing the Guard

  • Mid-Level Single-Leg Takedown – We’re working on another takedown this week. The mid-level single leg is a great way to throw an attacker or an opponent off balance. We’ll look at a couple of options based on our partners’ reactions.
  • Basic Guard Pass – Under – Guard passing is a skill that you will continue to hone throughout your BJJ career. This week our focus will be controlling the hips while we pass under the leg to come into side control.

Intermediate – Escape Side Control

  • Low-Level Double-Leg Takedown – This week we’re continuing to look at the low double leg. We’ll practice the setup, getting past an opponent’s three lines of defense: head, hands, and hips. Then we’ll look at the shot–snapping your partner’s hands down to get them out of position, getting low, and finally, changing the angle to knock them off balance.
  • Escape Side Control – Pummel Series – We’re working on the pummel escape from side control this week. There are several different options depending on the positioning of the person on top. Hipping out and hipping in are very important this week, as is paying close attention to your own arm positioning.

Kickboxing – Creating Angles and Stepping Off

The goal of combat sports is to hit and not get hit! This week we look at “stepping off” after our combinations to avoid getting countered. As a rule of thumb, if we finish with the lead hand, we will step off to our lead side. If we finish with the rear hand, we will step off to our rear side. The combinations this week will include throwing our initial combination, stepping off to the appropriate side, then following up after we have created our angle. Learning to step off will save you from getting caught in unnecessary exchanges!

Fitness Challenge: Burpees and Bicycle Crunches

Muay Thai – Clinch and Inside Work

This week we focus on the inside game of Muay Thai: the clinch. In traditional Thai Boxing, the clinch is the most important and technical aspect of the fight. Elbows and knees are the highest scoring weapons, and these usually occur in the clinch. We will focus on proper clinch posture, hand position, and stance. We will also look at basic clinch entries and steering/turning the opponent. After that we will look at some clinch sweeps and throws. We will also get some live go’s in the clinch this week, to get comfortable in the grapple. Stretch your neck out this week!

Kids – Polite Greeting

This week we’re talking about the value of a great first impression. Having a polite greeting for everyone we meet is a great way to set the tone for a good relationship.

BJJ

  • Little Tigers – This week we’ll be practicing mount escapes using the Snake Bite game.
  • Tigers – We’ll look at a basic collar choke from the back, as well as defending the guillotine choke from a standing position.
  • Advanced Tigers – Advanced students will practice the hook sweep from guard, as well as the front choke from mount.

Muay Thai

7-9 Year Olds – The younger group will be practicing numbered combinations with blocks and counter-punches.
10-13 Year Olds – The older group will be working on creating angles and “stepping off the tracks” to avoid getting hit.

Announcements

  • Congrats to all of the ETC competitors that brought home medals from the Nationals this past weekend! We know that everyone trained hard and gave it their all!

Thoughts

People spend too much time finding other people to blame, too much energy finding excuses for not being what they are capable of being, and not enough energy putting themselves on the line, growing out of the past, and getting on with their lives.
