6.8.2015 – 6.14.2015

BJJ

Fundamentals – Pummel

  • Low Back Clinch – This week we’re working on using a low back clinch to take down an opponent. We’ll practice a couple of different variations on this takedown, as our options change depending on our partners’ reaction.
  • Pummel Escape – We’ll be working on using the pummel to escape side control. Making sure to use every limb to aid the escape, we’ll practice a couple of variations.

Intermediate – Leg and Foot Attacks

  • Arm Drag – We’ll look at using the arm drag to close the distance between ourselves and our partners, setting up an opportunity to take them down. We’ll also look at what to do if we miss the arm, using the space our partner creates to go for a double-leg.
  • Leg and Foot Attacks – Continuing with another week of attacks on the lower body, we’ll start with the basic foot lock, and then move into the straight kneebar and straight ankle lock.

Kickboxing – Round Kicks

This week we focus on the round kick technique, one of the most important and common strikes in kickboxing and Muay Thai. The round kick, when thrown properly, is like swinging a baseball bat against your opponent! We will focus on proper body mechanics that will allow us to develop maximum speed, power, and torque on our kicks. Focus on relaxin your kicking leg and turning your entire body into the kick!

Fitness Challenge: Single-Leg Burpees & Toe Touches

Muay Thai – Switch Series

This week we focusing on creating angles with our strikes by switching stance during the combination. Throwing a combo while switching allows us to hide our footwork from the opponent and sets us up at an angle for the following strikes. In order to successfully do this, we must first get comfortable from our opposite stance. We will cover our switch single punch series, combo series, and sets ups for the switches!

Kids – Body Over Emotion

Continuing with our discussions on self-control, this week we’ll be talking about body over emotion, and why it’s important to stay in control physically, even when we’re upset.

BJJ

  • Little Tigers – We’re working on takedowns this week, drilling more Tackle the Giant, and incorporating it into other combinations.
  • Tigers – Tigers will be practicing defending a bear hug from the front, under the arms.
  • Advanced Tigers – The advanced group is working on the pendulum headlock escape.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai students will be practicing their elbows this week! We’ll look at the proper angles to throw the various types of elbows, and start putting them into combinations.

Thoughts

I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death. ~ Leonardo Da Vinci
