Martial Arts Technique Focus of the Week
BJJ
Fundamentals – Double-Leg and Triangle Choke
- Low-Level Double-Leg Takedown – The double leg is a fundamental takedown in BJJ, and a movement that every practitioner should understand. From a proper wrestling stance, we will focus on changing our level and shooting on our opponent’s legs.
- Triangle Choke – The triangle is a perfect move for self defense and sport jiu jitsu. It’s important for us to focus first on breaking our partner’s posture, and making sure they can not land strikes on us. Second, when we feel safe, we will learn how to set up our triangle. We’ll emphasize avoiding striking damage, and getting stacked on our neck by under-hooking the leg of our partner.
Intermediate – Drills, Hip Throw, and Butterfly Guard Attacks
- Drills, Hip Throw – Remember, all intermediate classes start with a hard drilling session. This week focus on setting up the russian tie, the push/pull wrestling stance drill, the arm drag drill, the hip throw, transitioning from DLR to anaconda guard, and passing the DLR with the smash pass to the mount. Please watch the video below for a detailed look at these drills.
- Attacking from Butterfly Guard – On the ground, we are studying how to attack from the butterfly guard. We’ll be using the hook sweep and the “take out the trash” sweep.
Kickboxing – Reloading, Posting, Framing, and Weight Distribution
One of the most fundamental principles of fighting is learning how to effectively use your weight to generate power in your strikes. This week, we will focus on transferring our weight properly between our lead leg and our rear leg while throwing strikes. We will also look at a technique called “reloading.” This allows us to throw the same-side strike two times in a row, with power. Once we learn to shift our weight properly, we will look at “posting” and “framing,” which are techniques used to control the opponent and create rhythm breaks in our attack patterns. These prove to be very useful and cause confusion to the opponent! Weight shifting will play a key role in your striking development, so pay attention this week and get some good repetitions
Muay Thai – Boxing
This week in the Muay Thai classes, we will focus on cleaning up our boxing for Muay Thai. Pure boxing is very different than boxing in Muay Thai, so we will look at using our hands to set up our other weapons and how we need to adjust our style to make boxing fit into the Art of 8 Limbs!
Thoughts
Character is How You Treat Those Who Can Do Nothing for You
There is a meme floating around that says “Character is how you treat those who can do nothing for you.” I think this is a very important theme in life. Learn how to be good to everyone and not just those who you will benefit from.
