Fundamentals – Punch Defense

  • Punch Defense to Low Back Clinch – Let’s look at getting safe and closing the distance between us and our partner. We will be starting by taking our hands and blocking our partner’s hands. From here our partner can go for a swinging punch. As they circle out to punch, we block their bicep. Now our hands circle under the armpits and we will tie them up with a clinch.
  • Punch Defense, Escape, and Back Take from Closed Guard – Whether we are talking about sport jiu jitsu or self defense, making sure our partner is not postured up is really important. Let’s start by having the partner on top with their hands on the stomach of the partner on bottom. Partner on bottom will bring their hands under the partner on top’s wrist and swipe their hands out to the side. At the same time, they will pull forward with their legs. It’s really important to get your double under grips and flare your elbows out. If this is done correctly, they should not be able to strike you. From here you will be able to use your legs and hips to get towards the back.

Intermediate

  • Drills: Push/pull stance drill, russian drill, arm drag drill, double leg takedown, and De la Riva to anaconda guard to 1 leg X-guard
  • Takedown: Double Leg Takedown
  • Ground: Escaping knee on belly

Remember, all intermediate classes start with a hard drilling session. This week focus on setting up the russian tie, the push/pull wrestling stance drill, arm drag drill, the double leg takedown, and transitioning from DLR to anaconda guard to 1 leg X-guard. Please watch the video below for a detailed look at these drills. On the ground, we are studying escapes from knee on belly. Be sure to blend these escapes in with the DLR/anaconda/1 leg X-guard series as shown in the video. Finish class with positional training from side control/knee on belly.

Advanced

  • Drills: Guard pull to sleave and collar guard, triangle, armbar and omoplata drills..
  • Ground: Attacking from the open guard.

Remember, all advanced classes start with a hard 25 minute drilling session. There are no videos yet, so please do your research before teaching class. Everyone teaching advanced curriculum should be familiar with these movements. On the ground, we are studying how to attack using the spider guard, the De La Riva gaurd and the inverted DLR. Make sure there is at least 45 minutes of training in every advanced class.

Kickboxing – Elbows

This week in kickboxing, we will go over the short-range weapon in the elbow. The elbow can be used to “cut” or “spear” the opponent, depending on how you throw it. We will look at proper elbow technique and then how to properly set our elbows up and cover distance from punch range to elbow range.

Muay Thai – Attacking the Legs

This week, we will look at leg kick offense, set ups, and follow ups. Learning how to attack the opponent’s legs is a valuable tool that can slow the opponent down, take steam off their strikes, and set us up for a ton of nice follow ups. A hard leg kick is a staple of every good Thai Boxer’s arsenal, and on the other side, building up your legs to take leg kicks is key as well.

Thoughts

We are a Diverse Group- Please be Respectful of Others:

The Easton Community is a diverse group, and that is something we are proud of. We are a place for everyone to train and grow as individuals. We are a sanctuary and a second home to our members. Always remember this, and remember the impact you have on others. The things you say, the things you do, and the way you talk to others all have an impact on our community. Please make sure that you are having a positive impact and going out of your way to make feel people welcome. This includes: not using foul language, not making jokes at the expense of others, and always making sure we are mindful of others’ feelings. If you see someone not acting in accordance with our values, do not chastise them, but rather kindly let them know that their behavior needs improvement. Be tactful, be kind and represent who we are well.
