Martial Arts Curriculum

Week of 12.19.2017 – 12.25.2017

BJJ

Fundamentals – undefined

  • Headlock Defense – Understanding how to defend the headlock is key for self-defense. This week we will look at how to defend the standing headlock by tripping our opponent to the rear and transitioning to an armbar.
  • Headlock Defense on the Ground – In order to properly defend ourselves, we must understand how to defend the headlock not only from standing, but also on the ground. This week we will look at a few escapes from the bottom of the headlock position, and finish by transitioning to an armbar.

Intermediate

  • Drills:
  • Takedown: Uchi Mata
  • Ground: Headlock/Scarf-hold defense

This week we are learning how to defend the headlock and scarf-hold on the ground. Please watch the video below for a detailed look at all five essential escapes.

Advanced

  • Drills:
  • Ground: Headlock/Scarf-hold defense

Remember, all advanced classes start with a hard 25 minute drilling session. There are no videos yet, so please do your research before teaching class. Everyone teaching advanced curriculum should be familiar with these movements. On the ground, we are studying how to pass the open-guard. Focus on forcing half-guard and passing with the long-step, knee slice, and smash pass. Make sure there is at least 45 minutes of training in every advanced class.

Kickboxing – Knees

This week in Kickboxing, we focus on a dangerous mid-range and short-range weapon: the knee. We will look at the mechanics and usage of the straight knee and the angled knee, as well as the skip knee and the barn door knee from the inside position in the “clinch.”

Muay Thai – Timebomb Seminar Review

We will be spending the week working on everything that Tiffany showed at her two amazing seminars over the weekend! If you attended the seminars, please come with questions from the sessions. If you didn’t attend, be ready to learn some new material!

The “Wall” and Getting Over it

Everybody, at some point in their workout program is going to hit the “wall.” Whether that means you’re feeling burned out, or you aren’t seeing the same rate of improvement, or you feel like you are plateauing…whatever the case may be, you are going to hit that wall at some point in your training. The trick is to be aware of it, and to understand that it’s natural for everyone. Getting over the wall, which all of you will do, is one of the most rewarding feelings you can have, and this obviously is not only true for our training, but also for our lives. Life is full of obstacles, and the most successful people are the ones who keep moving forward and deal with setbacks in stride. As far as our workouts are concerned, the way to get over it is to stay consistent, and to remember that you can always ask any of the instructors here for advice and guidance because getting over the wall is something we have all personally experienced. Again, it’s just necessary to understand that at some point all of us will hit the wall, but what’s important, and what really defines us, is that we have the indomitable spirit and the fortitude to get over it and forge ahead.
