Fundamentals – Osoto Gari and Escaping Mount

  • Osoto Gari – The Osoto-gari (Large outer reap) consists of pulling the opponent forward to destabilize him, and then sweeping his leg out from under him like a sickle cutting grass. Setting up Osoto Gari properly is super important if you want to be successful, so as it rings true with so many of the throws and takedowns…
  • Buck and Roll – The trap and roll is one of our basic escapes for the mount position. Being mounted can be a really bad situation…especially when you don’t have any idea of what to do to escape. Learning the buck and roll, or trap and roll as its called by some is the foundation for having great mount escapes. Next week, we’ll be going over the next layer (knee to elbow escape) you’ll need to escape more experienced opponents.

Intermediate – Mount Attacks and Sprawl

  • Mount Attacks – We spent a decent amount of time looking at mount maintenance for the last couple of weeks. Now we will be looking at a couple of attacks that flow together nicely from this position. The collar choke, and the Armbar when they defend. Enjoy it while you can, because after these two weeks, we’ll be looking at mount escapes again!
  • Sprawling to Avoid Takedown – A sprawl is a method of stopping/blocking a takedown by utilizing the downward force of your hips as you throw your legs backwards, away from your opponent’s reach. It is done in response to certain takedowns, such as a double-leg or a single-leg takedown. Once the sprawl has been effective, it is usually fairly easy for the top person to attack after they’ve stopped the shot.

Kickboxing – Knees

This week in Kickboxing, we focus on a dangerous mid-range and short-range weapon: the knee. We will look at the mechanics and usage of the straight knee and the angled knee, as well as the skip knee and the barn door knee from the inside position in the “clinch.”

Muay Thai – Straight Line Kick Defense

Last week we looked at the various straight line kick attacks in class and how to use them offensively. This week, we will flip the script and look at defending and countering these attacks. As with all kicks, we have a number of different defenses depending on the situation. We can parry (redirect), slide (evade), or catch these kicks. Based on our defense we will look at all the counter options as well. We will also take a look at how to get inside on an opponent who prefers using a lot of teeps or straight line kicks to keep us on the outside.
