Focus of the Week (8/6/18)

BJJ | Kickboxing | Muay Thai | Kids

Week of 8.6.2018 – 8.12.2018



  • Standing Headlock and Punch Defense – Understanding how to defend the headlock is key for self-defense. This week we will look at how to defend the standing headlock by tripping our opponent to the rear and transitioning to an armbar.
  • Control Top of Headlock and Finish Armbar – In order to properly defend ourselves, we must understand how to defend the headlock not only from standing, but also on the ground. This week we will look at a few escapes from the bottom of the headlock position, and finish by transitioning to an armbar.


  • Drills: Rafa Steps to Leg Drag
  • Takedown: Singe Leg (Dump and Outside Trip)
  • Ground: Guard Passing – Knee through the Middle


Kickboxing – Elbows

This week in kickboxing, we will go over the short-range weapon in the elbow. The elbow can be used to “cut” or “spear” the opponent, depending on how you throw it. We will look at proper elbow technique and then how to properly set our elbows up and cover distance from punch range to elbow range.

Muay Thai – Elbows and Short-Range Weapons

This week in Muay Thai, we will focus on on Zone 1 weapons: elbows and knees. We will look at how to transition from Zone 2 into Zone 1 safely with strikes, and how to combine elbows and knees on the inside. We will also continue to study the Thai Long Guard and how we can use it to get into Zone 1 while defending against punches.

Kids –

Little Tigers

  • Warm Up – Front rolls, back rolls, hipping out, and break fall
  • Standing – Jab, cross,step, and duck
  • BJJ – Crocodile Control, Super Base, Sneaky Mount, review Tackle the Giant
  • Game – Simon Says
  • Explanation – For the striking portion of the class, we will focus on jabs, crosses, footwork, and ducking. Make sure the students are standing in a correct Muay Thai stance. On the ground, we will warm up with a game of Simon Says, and then teach Crocodile Control. Crocodile control teaches students how to hold side control and advance from side control to the mount.

Tigers – Whtie Belt

  • Standing – Pummel and Low Back Clinch – Controlling the clinch is controlling the match. This is where we can learn to control and take our partner to the mat.
  • Ground – Frame and Pummel Escapes – Learning how to frame and pummel on bottom of side control is massively important. Keeping the elbows in tight and avoiding the head wrap will help you avoid getting submitted and having the partner on top advance. Keep in mind that next week we will add in escapes from headlocks on the ground. These movements all tie in together.

Tigers – Advanced

  • Standing – Snap Down to Go Behind – The snapdown to the go behind is a simple and effective way to get the fight to the mat. Make sure students understand how to pull their opponent to all fours using the snapdown, and then spin to the back. If time allows, show how to combine the snapdown with the double leg takedown.
  • Ground – Maintaining and Attacking the Mount – From the top of the mount, first review the basics of holding the position when on top. Then show the americana and the gift-wrap to the technical armbar.

Thoughts – Don’t Put off Until Tomorrow What You Can Do Today

I’m obviously preaching to the choir because clearly all of you are here bettering yourselves, and aren’t home sitting on the couch watching TV like a large majority of people. Still, I think it is incredibly important to hear from time to time the importance of initiative, and not putting the things off for tomorrow that could be done today. This is why I have never believed in New Year’s resolutions. If something is important enough that it is on our list of things to do, then waiting for an arbitrary date to begin is a disservice to ourselves. At some point, all of you made a decision to put your health and fitness on that list, and I am proud of all of you for getting in here and working hard. Pat yourself on the back for having the courage and gumption to get in here and work out today, instead of waiting for tomorrow. After all, tomorrow is not a luxury that anyone is promised…So today is what we have.
