Fundamentals – Bear Hug Defense and Side Control

  • Bear Hug from Behind – Keeping self-defense at the core is important. This is why we will be focusing on one of the basic self-defense situations with this week’s stand up. There are only a few ways an attacker will try and grab you to control you, and a bear hug is one. We will focus on the rear bear hug and how to neutralize it, and reverse the situation.
  • Side Control Attacks – Last couple of weeks we were focusing on what to do from the bottom of side control. Now we will shift focus to being on top and attacking the bottom person. Side control can be a dominant finishing position, and many even prefer it to the mount.

Intermediate – Double Leg and Guard Passing

  • Double-Leg Takedown – This week we will be going over one of the most effective takedowns from wrestling. This takedown is great for self-defense and competition, and can be utilized by smaller people against much larger opponents. If you can get in on your opponents hips, in good position and with good momentum, you should be able to make it happen!
  • Stand-Up Pass – standing to pass can be extremely effective and it also greatly diminishes your opponents chances of submitting you. When you stand, you can put yourself in a much better situation and effectively pass your opponents guard.

Kickboxing – Round Kicks

This week in Kickboxing, we focus on the most important and strongest strike in our arsenal: the round kick. This kick is widely regarded in combat sports as one of the most powerful and devastating strikes due to the sheer force and speed with which they can be thrown. Mechanics to develop a strong round kick are essential. We will focus on using our entire body and swinging our shin like a baseball bat in order to generate maximum force. The rear round kick, the lead leg switch kick, and learning how to throw these kicks for speed and balance will be the focus!

Muay Thai – Round Kick Defense

Last week, round kick offense. This week, round kick defense. Now we learn how to defend against a strong kicker. There are a number of ways to defend and counter a round kick, depending on the scenario. We will look at blocking, checking, catching, evading, and intercepting. All of these are important, so come get your reps in!
