Fundamentals – Hip Throw and Maintaining Side Control

  • Hip Throw – The hip throw is effective for both sport BJJ and self-defense. Whenever you are able to effectively use the power and leverage in your throw, it will be difficult for most people to stop.
  • Maintain Side Control and Advance – Maintaining side control long enough to effectively advance to mount or to apply a submission requires a great deal of understanding. This week we will go over some ways to control your opponent in side control, as well as a few ways to advance to mount.

Intermediate – Drills, Double-Leg, Knee on Belly Escapes

  • Double-Leg Takedown – Remember, all intermediate classes start with a hard drilling session. This week focus on setting up the Russian tie, the push/pull wrestling stance drill, arm drag drill, the double leg takedown, and transitioning from DLR to anaconda guard to 1 leg X-guard.
  • Knee on Belly Escapes – On the ground, we are studying escapes from knee on belly. Be sure to blend these escapes in with the DLR/anaconda/1 leg X-guard series as shown in the video. Finish class with positional training from side control/knee on belly.

Kickboxing – Leg Kicks

This week in KB 1, we look at attacking the legs of our opponent, using the outside low kick and the inside low kick. These two kicks are designed to attack the lead leg of our opponent and cause damage, which in turn with slow our opponent down, and opens up another level of our offense (head, body, legs). We will also look at the basic defense for low kicks, by “checking,” and how to counter and return properly.

Muay Thai – Boxing

This week in the Muay Thai program, we look at using our boxing for Muay Thai. Note, this is different than pure boxing! Many things that work well in pure boxing do not translate to Muay Thai because of the extra weapons available to us. Our boxing has to be simpler and more compact and used to set up our other weapons (kicks, knees, elbows).
