Fundamentals – Hip Throw and Maintaining Side Control

  • Basic Hip Throw – This is a judo throw that is great for utilizing leverage to throw your opponent over your hip. This technique is great for sport and self-defense. You usually land in a dominant position, and are able to throw your opponent with a great deal of force.
  • Maintain Side Control – This position is often called 100 kilos in Brazil. The idea is that you should feel like a 100K even if you’re smaller. This lets you know the type of pressure and control we are looking from in this position. Once you have your opponent stuck in side control, then we will advance to the mount.

Intermediate – Double Leg and Guard Passing

  • Basic Double-Leg – One of our staple take downs being revisited here. We look at a few takedowns and repeat them throughout the curriculum. This gives you an opportunity to keep improving at them instead of just getting a quick look and then not seeing it again for 16 weeks. This double is a must have for your takedown arsenal!
  • Guard Passing Over and Under – Most would agree that the best way to pass the guard whenever possible, is to stand. This gives you a better chance to pass without falling into your opponent’s traps because it immediately negates a good deal of their offense. We’ll be looking at standing to open the guard, then using some concepts we’ve seen before to complete the pass.

Kickboxing – Leg Kicks

This week in level 1, we look at attacking the third and lowest level: the legs. We will focus on our leg kick technique this week, which is an extremely effective technique in kickboxing and Muay Thai. When thrown properly, the leg kick can easily stop fights and prevent the opponent from continuing. We will focus on proper mechanics to generate power and speed, placement, timing, and set ups. Chop the leg!

Muay Thai – Clinch and Inside Work

This week in Muay Thai, we look at the most important, but often most under-developed of American Muay Thai arsenal’s: the clinch. Basic clinch positioning, posture, entries, attacks, and sweeps will be the focus this week. Also basic defense and escapes. Most people start out despising the clinch, because it is very helpless position if you are new to it. However, once you learn even the basics, you have a huge advantage over everyone else! Come get your reps in this week and develop strong clinch fundamentals!

Thoughts

It is always the false that makes you suffer, the false desires and fears, the false values and ideas, the false relationships between people. Abandon the false and you are free of pain; truth makes happy, truth liberates.
