Fundamentals – Bear Hug Defense and Guard Passing

  • Rear Bear Hug Defense – Over Arms – There are really only several ways someone will grab you in an attempt to control you, or assault you. This is one of them. We will look at exactly how to react to this precarious situation. We can not allow someone to grab ahold of you in this or any other manor. Thankfully, we have the details to keep you safe!
  • Guard Passing – Over – Last week, we looked at passing under the legs. This week, we will look at the other side of that coin. Like I have said previously, it always works best when you can go back and forth between two ideas. This is no different. We learned how to go under the legs already, but what if they’re good at stopping that method? Here’s the answer…go over!

Intermediate – Renzo Hip Throw and Guard Passing

  • Renzo Hip Throw – This hip throw variation is awesome for using your opponents’ momentum against them. We push into them to get them to push back, then we use that push to throw them. When set up properly, it works like a charm.
  • Guard Passing – Knee through the Middle – This pass is perfect for when you get someone who isn’t looking to be very offensive with their closed guard. Perhaps they’re content to keep you trapped in the closed guard. You have to have some options for when this happens, and this is a pretty good one. It allows you to open the guard and begin to pass even against a resisting opponent.

Kickboxing – Knees

This week in Kickboxing, we focus on a dangerous mid-range and short-range weapon: the knee. We will look at the mechanics and usage of the straight knee and the angled knee, as well as the skip knee and the barn door knee from the inside position in the “clinch.”

Muay Thai – Southpaw vs. Orthodox

This week in Muay Thai, we will focus on the classic match up in combat sports: righty vs lefty. In this match up, there are a variety of strikes and set ups that don’t normally work against two right-handed fighters that we will examine. We will also look at the basic principles of fighting against the opposite stance, what to look for in terms of openings, and how to stay safe against their attacks. Take notes!

Announcements

  • The F2W Pro 4 event is next weekend! We have 15 ETC competitors on this show, so please drop in to grab a ticket or two and come out to support. We should have a MASSIVE section of ETC members there rooting for all of our students/coaches that will be putting it on the line. Join us, and lets put CO Jiu-Jitsu on the map!

Thoughts

Certain thoughts are prayers. There are moments when, whatever be the attitude of the body, the soul is on its knees.
