Fundamentals – Single Legs and Back Escapes
- Mid-Level Single-Leg – This takedown is exactly what it sounds like. We gain control of one of our opponent’s legs, then use leverage to drag them to the ground. Once there, we’ll gain the dominant position and look to advance. Takedowns require some serious muscle memory. This is why you have to be diligent with the training. See you on the mat!
- Back Escapes – Now that you learned how to attack the back last week, now it is time to escape this position. We already spoke about how bad it is to have someone on your back…now we’ll explain how to escape/upgrade your position. We will look at a couple of different options based on your opponent’s hand position.
Intermediate – Shot Defense and Side Control
- Shot Defense – Instructors will choose from their favorite shot defense techniques and share with us this week. Single leg, double leg, and hip throws are just a few examples of techniques we will learn to defend. Don’t miss out on these techniques…you’ll be sorry.
- Side Control – This is another pivotal position for you to make sure you understand. If you can hold your opponent down here, then advancing to mount or submitting them should become much easier. We will cover switching sides and going to mount this week.
Kickboxing – Push Kicks and Teeps
Push kicks are a great, multi-use weapon in the kickboxing arsenal. The lead-leg push kick, commonly called the “teep,” can be used just like the jab: to find your range and establish distance, or to disrupt your opponent’s rhythm. The rear-leg push kick is much more powerful and can be used as an actual strike or to knock your opponent off balance. We will focus this week on proper push kick mechanics, and how to properly set up and follow up your push kicks and teeps!
Muay Thai – Clinch Work
This week we focus on the most important element of traditional Muay Thai: the clinch game. Watching two high-level fighters work inside the clinch is a very exciting and intricate part of the fight. While in the clinch, fighters are constantly jockeying for hand position, head position, and foot position, in order to make space for elbows or knees, or to better position themselves to sweep or dump their opponent. This week we will look at basic clinch posture and positioning, clinch offense and defense, as well as some fun throws and sweeps that trick your opponent. Be ready for a sore neck this week!
- The Holidays are upon us! There is probably a last minute chance to do something nice for someone. Several of the schools are doing donations for Children’s Hospitals…others are volunteering time. What will you do to give back and keep with the holiday spirit of giving??
