Fundamentals – Headlock Defense

  • Standing Headlock Defense – Understanding how to defend the headlock is key for self-defense. This week we will look at how to defend the standing headlock by tripping our opponent to the rear and transitioning to an armbar.
  • Headlock Escapes – In order to properly defend ourselves, we must understand how to defend the headlock not only from standing, but also on the ground. This week we will look at a few escapes from the bottom of the headlock position, and finish by transitioning to an armbar.

Intermediate – Arm Drag and Scarf Hold Defense

  • Arm Drag – Arm drags are awesome ways to close the distance and take your opponent down. Timing, speed, and momentum play a huge part in the success of arm drag take downs, and we will show you how to set these up with confidence.
  • Scarf Hold Escape – Much like the headlock, scarf holds can be devastating when done by the right individual. The important thing for us here is to know how to escape the scarf hold, and or turn it into a headlock, so we can escape without incident. If you are slow to act, you could very well find yourself getting submitted from this position.

Kickboxing – Knees

This week in Kickboxing, we focus on a dangerous mid-range and short-range weapon: the knee. We will look at the mechanics and usage of the straight knee and the angled knee, as well as the skip knee and the barn door knee from the inside position in the “clinch.”

Muay Thai – Elbows and Clinch

This week in Muay Thai we focus on elbows, one of the trickiest weapons to throw in a fight, but also one of the most rewarding. We will look at how to set our elbows up and how to safely close the distance from medium range to short/inside range to land our elbows. We will also study hand fighting and hand positioning techniques on the inside to allow us to land elbows from some sneaky positions.


Motivation vs. Dedication
It’s important to know the difference between motivation and dedication. Motivation is great, but it’s a very temporary feeling. Everyone, at some point in their lives is motivated to do something. All of you, if you are newer, are probably motivated right now to be here. Dedication, on the other hand, is different. It is a deep-seated promise we silently make to ourselves. It’s a promise that sometimes is hard to keep, but that is why people who are successful are always dedicated. To be dedicated means to keep pursuing your goal even when you are no longer motivated. The days when you’re tired, or it’s raining out, and the last thing you want to do is come in here and train, that is where dedication separates itself from motivation. I challenge everyone in here to make that promise to yourself, and to live a healthier and more rewarding life because of it.
