Fundamentals – Bear Hug Defense and Side Control Attacks

  • Bear Hug from Behind (Under Arms) – Last week we looked at how to get out of the bear hug if our partner is grabbing over our arms. This week we will be looking at how to escapes the bear hug if our partner is grabbing us under our arms. Because we a more free to use our arms in this position it makes fighting it off slightly easier. We will look at how to use our hands and hip position to break their grips, and escape to a superior position.
  • Side Control Attacks – When you have someone in side control you’re top priority is always to maintain the position. Even if you are naturally small superior body position will make you feel very heavy. Once we all learn some basic strategies to maintain we will start looking at isolating the far side arm and going for our attack series of three.

Intermediate – Double Leg and Half Guard

  • Double-Leg Takedown – Now that we have spent a substantial amount of time on the sprawl and double leg we should be feeling pretty efficient with these. Now this week with the double leg lets really up the hand and position fighting, and then adding in our double leg off hand fighting.
  • Half Guard Top – Pass half guard with base switch (step-out; push-out and kimura). Getting past half guard is really daunting at first. Especially if the person you are going against has a strong shield (top leg that frames against you’re torso). We will be looking at how to eliminated the shield, get our partners shoulders flat, and get past the half guard. Now that we have learn all this, lets learn how to eliminate the partners pummel if they are trying to come on top. Once we ged rid of that (and re-pummel the partners pummel) we will learn how to get back to the half guard passes we just leaned.

Kickboxing – Round Kicks

This week in Kickboxing, we focus on the most important and strongest strike in our arsenal: the round kick. This kick is widely regarded in combat sports as one of the most powerful and devastating strikes due to the sheer force and speed with which they can be thrown. Mechanics to develop a strong round kick are essential. We will focus on using our entire body and swinging our shin like a baseball bat in order to generate maximum force. The rear round kick, the lead leg switch kick, and learning how to throw these kicks for speed and balance will be the focus!

Muay Thai – Boxing

This week in Muay Thai we will focus on the most under-developed weapon of traditional Muay Thai: boxing. We will focus on building strong boxing defense and counters, as well as creating some unique angles of attack.


It is very important to make sure that we are all taking our cleanliness seriously. Make sure you are showering after training and washing and cleaning your equipment: gis, boxing gloves, shin pads etc. Not only is personal hygiene important for our health and the health of those around us, but it is also a matter of being considerate. Do not be the person that no one wants to train with.
