Fundamentals – Frame and Foot Sweep

  • Foot Sweep – Foot sweeps can be great opportunistic take down if you’re aware of the mechanics and the timing. This week, we’ll break down the foot sweep walking backwards.
  • Basic Frame – When on the bottom of side control, we need to be able to improve our position with a sense of urgency. The Frame is like the other side of the Pummel. Typically, these two ideas work extremely well together and allow for you to maximize your potential to escape. Don’t miss this week or you’ll be missing an important piece of your puzzle. See you on the mat!

Intermediate – Double Leg and Standing Guard Pass

  • Double Leg – This is one of the staple takedowns, which is why we revisit it so much. It takes years to get good at these takedowns, so lets get going towards the 1,000 repetitions it’s going to take for us to get this one down!
  • Basic Standing Pass – Professor Vellore’s favorite way to pass is standing. It takes so much of the opponent’s offense away. It does, however, take some time to master, so get in to class this week and get started. Once you’re able to stand in most guards, your passing game will be much improved.

Kickboxing – Push Kicks and Teeps

The push kick, or front kick, is a great long-range weapon in Kickboxing and Muay Thai, that allows for distance control, off-balancing the opponent, or disrupting their rhythm. The lead-leg push kick is referred to as the “Teep” in Thai, or the foot jab. The rear-leg push kick is much more powerful, as it is thrown with full body weight behind it. This week we will look at how to maximize our range and power on these push kicks by using our body!

Muay Thai – Boxing Defense and Countering

They say the best way to fight is to “hit and not get hit,” but the reality is that is rarely the case. With that being said, lets work on proper punch defense this week in order to misdirect or minimize the force of our opponent’s punches. Once we have established strong defense, we can work on our various counters, depending on range and body positioning. The goal of these drills is to make them second nature, so take your time and make your repetitions perfect this week!


  • Congratulations to all of the ETC competitors that went to Seattle this past weekend for the IBJJF Open! Several competitors went out and are coming home better with the experience of a hard fought tournament, and some bling in hand as well! As usual, we are all proud of you! Keep it up!
