Fundamentals – Bear Hug Defense and Guard Passing

  • Defending Bear Hug from Behind (Over Arms) – Defending the bear hug from behind can be pretty tricky, especially when our arms are trapped. Learning to use our body as a whole to get out of this position can be a laborious process, but well worth the time spent.
  • Closed Guard Passing from Knees – Being stuck in closed guard can be a extremely frustrating experience. Sometimes even if the partner isn’t doing anything offensive, it can be very difficult to escape. Learning how we can escape using good posture and proper grips will really help us understand how to escape closed guard, and expand our overall knowledge of defense in our training.

Intermediate – Drills, Punch Defense to Side Clinch, Armbar and Triangle

  • Punch Defense to Side Clinch – Remember, all intermediate classes start with a hard drilling session. This week focus on setting up the Russian tie, the push/pull wrestling stance drill, the arm drag drill, defending punches with the side clinch, and transitioning from DLR to anaconda guard to 1 leg X-guard. Please watch the video below for a detailed look at these drills.
  • Armbar and Triangle from Closed Guard – On the ground, we are studying how to attack the technical armbar from the closed guard, and then how to transition to the triangle choke when our partner pulls their arm out of the armbar. Finish class with positional training from the closed guard.

Kickboxing – Angles of Attack

The goal of combat sports is to hit and not get hit! This week, we will focus on different ways of “stepping off the line” to avoid getting hit after we hit our opponents. A good rule of thumb is to step to the side you finish on. So, if you finish with your lead hand, step to your lead side. If you finish with your rear hand, exit to your rear side. This week, we drill the pivot step to the lead side and the slide step to our rear side. Get off the tracks!

Muay Thai – Open Stance Tactics (Southpaw vs. Orthodox)

One of the most classic match ups in combat sports: orthodox vs southpaw. The majority of fighters prefer the orthodox stance, so it’s important to know how to face an opposite-stance fighter. Many tactics that normally work against an orthodox fighter will not work against a lefty! We will look at basic offensive strategies, basic defense, and countering the lefty attacks.

Cleanliness

It is very important to make sure that we are all taking our cleanliness seriously. Make sure you are showering after training and washing and cleaning your equipment: gis, boxing gloves, shin pads etc. Not only is personal hygiene important for our health and the health of those around us, but it is also a matter of being considerate. Do not be the person that no one wants to train with.
