- Low-Level Double-Leg Takedown – The double leg is a fundamental takedown in BJJ, and a movement that every practitioner should understand. From a proper wrestling stance, we will focus on changing our level and shooting on our opponent’s legs.
- Front Choke and Scissor Sweep from Closed Guard – We will begin this week’s class by attacking the front choke from the closed guard. When our opponent moves to block our choke, we will switch to the scissors sweep.
- Drills: Rafa Steps to Leg Drag
- Takedown: Uchi Mata
- Ground: Headlock/Scarf-Hold defense
Kickboxing – Boxing
This week in Kickboxing L1, we will be focusing on the “Sweet Science!” We will examine the similarities and the differences between traditional boxing and boxing for Kickboxing/Muay Thai. Let’s work on getting a mean jab this week!
Muay Thai – Leg Kick Defense and Counters
Last week our focus was low kick offense and strategy, so this week we flip the script and look at our common types of defense and how they apply to the low kick! Not all of our common defenses work well against the low kick, so we will focus on the core defenses (check/block, evade, intercept) and our best counter opportunities against a heavy-low kicker as well.
Kids – ABCs of Conflict Avoidance – Be Calm, Breathe
A=Avoid Potentially Dangerous Situations.
C=Communicate Wtih Confidence.
D=Don’t Make the Situation Worse by Arguing or Fighting.
This week we are going to talk about “B” which stands for “Be Calm/Breathe.”
Let’s think about how we breathe when we are angry. It’s usually shallow and quick breaths. Our breathing is very similar when we are afraid. When you are calm and relaxed, your breathing is slower and deeper.
- Warm Up – Front Rolls, Back Rolls, Hipping Out, Break Fall
- Standing – Jab, Cross, Step, Duck
- BJJ – Bulldozer Walk, Crazy Roll, Shark Bite, and Spider Kid
- Game – Ball Game
- Explanation – For the striking portion of the class, we will focus on basic jabs, crosses, ducks and side steps to both the left and the right in a correct Muay Thai stance. On the ground for Jiu Jitsu, we will warm up with a game, and then practice some basic movements from the top of the mount position. The Bulldozer Walk teaches students to move to technical mount when their opponent turns on their side, and the Crazy Roll teaches students to take the back when their opponent turns to their belly and comes to all fours. We’ll revisit Spider Kid and Shark Bite if time allows.

Thoughts – “The Wall” and Getting Over It
Everybody, at some point in their workout program is going to hit the “wall.” Whether that means you’re feeling burned out, or you aren’t seeing the same rate of improvement, or you feel like you are plateauing…whatever the case may be, you are going to hit that wall at some point in your training. The trick is to be aware of it, and to understand that it’s natural for everyone. Getting over the wall, which all of you will do, is one of the most rewarding feelings you can have, and this obviously is not only true for our training, but also for our lives. Life is full of obstacles, and the most successful people are the ones who keep moving forward and deal with setbacks in stride. As far as our workouts are concerned, the way to get over it is to stay consistent, and to remember that you can always ask any of the instructors here for advice and guidance because getting over the wall is something we have all personally experienced. Again, it’s just necessary to understand that at some point all of us will hit the wall, but what’s important, and what really defines us, is that we have the indomitable spirit and the fortitude to get over it and forge ahead.
