Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
- Standing Punch Defense to Side Clinch – Let’s look at getting safe and closing the distance between us and our partner. We will be starting by taking our hands and blocking our partner’s hands. From here our partner can go for a swinging punch. As they circle out to punch, we block their bicep. Now our hands circle under the armpits and we will tie them up with a clinch.
- Punch Defense from Closed Guard with Back Take – Whether we are talking about sport jiu jitsu or self defense, making sure our partner is not postured up is really important. Let’s start by having the partner on top with their hands on the stomach of the partner on bottom. Partner on bottom will bring their hands under the partner on top’s wrist and swipe their hands out to the side. At the same time, they will pull forward with their legs. It’s really important to get your double under grips and flare your elbows out. If this is done correctly, they should not be able to strike you. From here you will be able to use your legs and hips to get towards the back.
- Drills: Split the Middle (Knee Slice)
- Takedown: Front Headlock/Sprawl
- Ground: Gift Wrap from Mount (Take Back, Armbar)
Kickboxing – Angles of Attack
This week in kickboxing, we will focus on using the teep, which translates to “foot jab” in Thai. The teep is a versatile weapon that can be used for range finding, disruption, off-balance your opponent, or setting up another attack. We will look at the mechanics of this kick then explore the different uses of the teep!
Muay Thai – Round Kick Defense and Counters
Last week, round kick offense. This week, round kick defense. Now we learn how to defend against a strong kicker. There are a number of ways to defend and counter a round kick, depending on the scenario. We will look at blocking, checking, catching, evading, and intercepting. All of these are important, so come get your reps in!
Kids – Magic Words
This week we are going to talk about magic words and how to say them. The magic words of good manners are: Please, Thank You, May I, Excuse Me, etc. Having good manners isn’t just about using the right words. It is about saying them in the right way.
- Warm Up – Front rolls, back rolls, hipping out, and break fall
- Standing – Jab, Cross, Knee
- BJJ – Shark Bite, Quick Bite, Shark Hug, review Spider Kid
- Game – Instructor Choice
- Explanation –
For the striking portion of the class, we will focus on jabs, crosses, and elbows. Making sure the students are standing in a correct Muay Thai stance. In the Jiu Jitsu portion, we will warm up with a game of Infection, and then move on to Shark Bite. Shark Bite teaches students to escape the mount using the buck and roll technique when their opponent is attempting to hit them from the top of the mount. We’ll revisit Spider Kid if time allows.
Tigers – Whtie Belt
- Standing – Rear bear hug defense
- Ground – Armbar from the bottom of guard
Tigers – Advanced
- Standing – Single grip strip
- Ground – Fan sweep from the bottom of guard. In the gi we’ll transition into a Kimura lock, and for the no-gi classes we’ll focus on the guillotine choke.
Thoughts – Healthy Lifestyles
We are a pretty unique place to train. On one side we have martial arts and self defense classes going on, and on the other we have fitness classes of many varieties taking place. The truth is, on both sides whether martial arts or fitness, we are very concerned with self-defense. Self-defense means much more than learning how to punch, kick, choke and armbar someone. Statistically speaking, most people are hurt or killed not by some violent attacker, but by heart disease, or some sort of health complication due to unhealthy lifestyles. All of you are here for a reason, and I would hedge my bets, that fitness and health is close to number 1 on everyone’s list. The reason we are here teaching is because we care about your goals, and we care about your health. We can come in and work with you for an hour a day and in that hour make great strides, but really, in the end, the food you’re eating and your habits outside the gym play an equally important role. Again, we consider ourselves a place where you can get in shape and learn some great self-defense skills, but the self-defense skills we strive to teach are more than just the martial arts. We want you to live better, eat better, and in general live healthier happier lives.
