Fundamentals – undefined

  • Hip Throw – The hip throw is effective for both sport BJJ and self-defense. Whenever you are able to effectively use the power and leverage in your throw, it will be difficult for most people to stop.
  • Maintain Side Control and Advance to Mount – Maintaining side control long enough to effectively advance to mount or to apply a submission requires a great deal of understanding. This week we will go over some ways to control your opponent in side control, as well as a few ways to advance to mount.

Intermediate

  • Drills: Anaconda guard sweep, esgrima pass, mount from side control, gift-wrap to armbar or back
  • Takedown: Front Headlock/Sprawl
  • Ground: Gift wrap from the top of the mount

Remember, all intermediate classes start with a hard drilling session. Please watch the video below for a detailed look at these drills. On the ground, we are learning how to attack from the top of the mount using the gift wrap series.

Advanced

  • Drills: Anaconda guard sweep, esgrima pass, mount from side control, gift-wrap to armbar or back
  • Ground: Gift wrap from the top of the mount

Remember, all advanced classes start with a hard 25 minute drilling session. There are no videos yet, so please do your research before teaching class. Everyone teaching advanced curriculum should be familiar with these movements. On the ground, we are studying how to pass the open-guard. Focus on forcing half-guard and passing with the long-step, knee slice, and smash pass. Make sure there is at least 45 minutes of training in every advanced class.

Kickboxing – Leg Kicks

This week in KB 1, we look at attacking the legs of our opponent, using the outside low kick and the inside low kick. These two kicks are designed to attack the lead leg of our opponent and cause damage, which in turn with slow our opponent down, and opens up another level of our offense (head, body, legs). We will also look at the basic defense for low kicks, by “checking,” and how to counter and return properly.

Muay Thai – Boxing

This week in Muay Thai, we will be focusing on using our hands as our main weapon. In traditional Muay Thai, punching is scored the least out of our weapons. However, in Muay Thai in the US, boxing is usually scored equal to other strikes. We will look at using our punching to set up other other weapons, as well as focusing on attacking the body with our boxing! If we have strong boxing, it greatly increases our chances of landing our other weapons behind it!

Motivation vs. Dedication

It’s important to know the difference between motivation and dedication. Motivation is great, but it’s a very temporary feeling. Everyone, at some point in their lives is motivated to do something. All of you, if you are newer, are probably motivated right now to be here. Dedication, on the other hand, is different. It is a deep-seated promise we silently make to ourselves. It’s a promise that sometimes is hard to keep, but that is why people who are successful are always dedicated. To be dedicated means to keep pursuing your goal even when you are no longer motivated. The days when you’re tired, or it’s raining out, and the last thing you want to do is come in here and train, that is where dedication separates itself from motivation. I challenge everyone in here to make that promise to yourself, and to live a healthier and more rewarding life because of it.
