Fundamentals – Punch Defense
- Stop Hands to Low Back Clinch – Let’s look at getting safe and closing the distance between us and our partner. We will be starting by taking our hands and blocking our partner’s hands. From here our partner can go for a swinging punch. As they circle out to punch, we block their bicep. Now our hands circle under the armpits and we will tie them up with a clinch.
- Punch Defense from Closed Guard – Whether we are talking about sport jiu jitsu or self defense, making sure our partner is not postured up is really important. Let’s start by having the partner on top with their hands on the stomach of the partner on bottom. Partner on bottom will bring their hands under the partner on top’s wrist and swipe their hands out to the side. At the same time, they will pull forward with their legs. It’s really important to get your double under grips and flare your elbows out. If this is done correctly, they should not be able to strike you. From here you will be able to use your legs and hips to get towards the back.
Intermediate – New Class Format
- Drills: Push/pull stance drill, arm drag drill, post to single leg, and De la Riva to anaconda guard
- Takedown: Single leg
- Ground: Side control escapes
- Class description: All intermediate classes will now start with a hard drilling session consisting of the push/pull wrestling stance drill, arm drag drill, post to single leg drill, and using the De la Riva guard to transition to the anaconda guard. Please watch the video below for a detailed look at these drills. Next, look at finishing the single leg with a standard dump and outside trip. Finally, get to the ground to practice escaping side control using both the frame and pummel. There are a total of five escapes that all intermediate students must understand from this position; again be sure to study the video to see all five in detail. Finish class with positional training from side control.
Kickboxing – Elbows
This week in kickboxing, we will go over the short-range weapon in the elbow. The elbow can be used to “cut” or “spear” the opponent, depending on how you throw it. We will look at proper elbow technique and then how to properly set our elbows up and cover distance from punch range to elbow range.
Muay Thai – Clinch and Zone 1 Continued
We will continue our examination of the clinch and Zone 1 this week in Muay Thai! We will focus on the more intricate aspects of weight positioning and hand positioning in the clinch in order to help us gain an advantage on the inside. We will look at setting up our knee and elbow attacks, as well as some nice throws and sweeps. Expect a lot more “live” rounds this week!
The Importance of Self-Awareness
A discrepancy between how you think you are perceived by others and how you are actually viewed exists in most of us. It is important to be aware of this discrepancy–at least in the abstract. We should all strive to be more self-aware, and pay closer attention to how our actions may affect and influence others. In doing so, we can aim to be better people in the world.
