BJJ

Fundamentals – Headlock

  • Standing Headlock with Punches – The standing headlock is not something we teach, as it isn’t really the best technique, but many people will utilize this attack in real situations. We will cover how to remain safe in this situation and how to take the fight to the ground. Last week we did the armbar from the top, after the takedown. This week, we’ll be escaping the headlock on the ground.
  • Headlock Escapes on the Ground – Again, a headlock is not good Jiu-Jitsu, but they happen, so we need to be very skilled at escaping the headlock on the ground as well as standing. With a few very basic concepts and skills, you’ll be able to fight out of this bad spot with relative ease.

Intermediate –

  • Renzo Hip Throw – This hip throw is the same as the regular hip throw we do from Judo, but with a specific grip and set up that changes it just a little. This technique is always a solid addition to any standup game.
  • Guard Passing from Knees – I prefer to pass the guard standing whenever possible, but some times the opponent makes it difficult, or impossible to stand. For this, we must be able to adapt and overcome…that’s where this week’s guard pass comes in. Using the Zebeleza style pass, we will remain on our knees while we open the guard and begin to pass.

Kickboxing – Body Punches and Changing Levels

This week in Level 1, we look at the art of “attacking the body.” A well-rounded boxer can attack the head and the body, and use one target to set up the next. We will focus on how to properly change levels to attack the body of our opponent, and look at various set-ups and follow-ups to the body shots. Learning how to place our body shots is also key!

Muay Thai – Round Kick Offense: Technique, Timing, and Follow-Ups

This week in Muay Thai: round kicks, round kicks, and more round kicks. Learning how to throw this technique with power and precision, as it is one of the higher scoring techniques in traditional Muay Thai scoring. This week we will focus on setting the round kick up properly, following it up with different attacks, and intercepting our opponent’s attacks with a strong round kick. Lots of reps this week, be ready!

Announcements

  • Congrats again to all of the ETC competitors that fought at the Muay Thai Event in Golden this weekend. Several of the schools were represented at the event and we suffered zero losses, and represented really well.
  • Don’t forget that there are many competitions on the horizon and many of the schools have special competition training that has been added to the schedule. Check with your coaches and staff at your home school to find out what’s available…

Thoughts

Perserverance: Outlasting the most rash, pessimistic, cowardly naysayers; those first in line to deny us the dreams never tried. Ourselves.
