Fundamentals – Pummel and Armbar

  • Pummel to Low Back Clench – This week, we will look at pummeling for position from standing. Once we win the pummel fight, we should be in position to clasp our hands behind our partner’s low back and utilize that leverage to take them down. This is a great takedown because it usually leaves you in a great position.
  • Armbar from Headlock – This is the perfect compliment to the standup technique, because we will of course take the fight to the ground when someone headlocks us standing. Most people that think a headlock is a good idea, will stay committed to it. This often leaves us stuck in that headlock once we hit the ground. No problem, because now we will look at turning that position into an arm bar for us.

Intermediate – Hip Throw and Guard Passing

  • Renzo Hip Throw – This hip throw is the same as the regular hip throw we do from Judo, but with a specific grip and set up that changes it just a little. This technique is always a solid addition to any standup game.
  • Guard Passing from Knees – I prefer to pass the guard standing whenever possible, but some times the opponent makes it difficult, or impossible to stand. For this, we must be able to adapt and overcome…that’s where this week’s guard pass comes in. Using the Zebeleza style pass, we will remain on our knees while we open the guard and begin to pass.

Kickboxing – Elbows

The elbow is one of the sneakiest and hardest strikes to land, because of how close to your opponent you have to be to throw it! This week we will look at proper technique when delivering an elbow, various elbow strikes, and how to properly set these elbows up to disguise them from the opponent.

Muay Thai – Round Kick Defense

Last week we focused on building a strong round kick in the offensive mindset. This week, we will look at some options on how to defend against the round kick and take it away from our opponent. We will look at blocking, checking, intercepting, catching, and evading these kicks, and then the appropriate counters off them. Learning the defense is as important as learning how to throw the weapon!

Announcements

  • There are some good travel tournaments coming up and we usually have students that travel out to compete. The Pans for instance is coming up and we will certainly have people going out for it. If you’re interested in going, check with your coaches and they will probably be able to put you in contact with someone else who is also going. Strength in numbers is real!

Thoughts

You can map out a fight plan or a life plan, but when the action starts, it may not go the way you planned, and you’re down to your reflexes – that means your [preparation]. That’s where your roadwork shows. If you cheated on that in the dark of the morning, well, you’re going to get found out now, under the bright lights.
