BJJ

Fundamentals – Mount Escapes

  • Osoto Gari and Foot Sweep – This is a nice combo from Judo that flows together nicely. The first part, Osoto-gari is one of the original 40 throws of Judo as developed by Jigoro Kano. It is also included in the current 67 Throws of Kodokan Judo, and is classified as a foot technique, Ashi-Waza. Speaking of foot techniques…this one leads directly into another one in the opposite direction when your opponent defends Osoto-gari by stepping backwards out of it.
  • Buck and Roll – Very few situations are as scary as being held down and not being able to escape. The mount is either the worst position to be in, or the second worst place to be in, depending on who you ask when it comes to self-defense. Good thing you won’t be there long since you’ll have these escapes down so good they’ll be second nature! We’ll be focusing on Buck-and-roll escapes, which are easy against untrained opponents, and even work at the highest levels of Jiu-Jitsu.

Intermediate – Closed Guard

  • Takedown Defense – Every match or fight starts standing. We do a decent amount of takedown repetitions, but over the next couple of weeks, we will be focusing on shutting down our opponents attempts to take us down. The Instructors will show us their favorite ways to shut down stand up offense, and maybe even how to turn those attempts into offense for us!
  • Closed Guard Attacks – Still looking at work from the closed guard. The next two weeks will have us looking at a nice triple attack which begins with an armbar, transitions to a triangle, and then back to an armbar if the first two attempts are unsuccessful.

Kickboxing – Stepping Off and Creating Angles

This week we look at the concept of “stepping of the line” in order to hit and not get hit! In general, if we finish a combination with our lead hand, we will step off to our lead side, and if we finish a combination with our rear hand, we will step off to our rear side. This week we will look at pivoting to our lead side and sliding to our rear side. Once we have “stepped off” and created an angle, we will take advantage by following up with another combination. Learn to hit the opponent and make them miss, then make them pay!

Fitness Challenge: One-Legged Burpees & Elbow-Tap Planks

Muay Thai – Knees

In traditional Muay Thai, knees are the second-highest scoring weapon, behind the elbow. This week we will look at various knee attacks (straight knees, skip knees, round knees, etc.) and different set ups to open the opponent for the knee. We will also look at different ways to enter the middle to short-range so we are in position to deliver a knee. Most of the time, after a knee is delivered, the clinch is initiated, so we will also look at clinch entries off the knee strike. Come get your knee-work in this week and learn how to be a threat on the inside!

Kids

BJJ

  • Little Tigers – Little Tigers are continuing their work on maintaining the mount. Get ready for Spider Kid!
  • Tigers – Tigers are practicing a new back take.
  • Advanced Tigers – The advanced students are practicing the busy back take series, followed with the pendulum sweep.

Muay Thai

This week we’ll be looking at moving around an opponent, stepping out of their striking range, and creating better angles for our own attacks.
