Fundamentals – Side Control Attacks
- Bear Hug Defense – Under the Arms – This week we’re defending a bear hug from behind, when an attacker grabs under your arms. We’ll practice getting a stable base and taking out one of their legs.
- Side Control Attacks – Kimura, Armbar, and Americana – Last week we focused on maintaining this week we start to look for the submission. We’ll work on three different options to attack the arm from side control.
Intermediate – Frame Escape
- Low-Level Double-Leg – We’ll practice the setup, getting past an opponent’s three lines of defense: head, hands, and hips. Then we’ll look at the shot–snapping your partner’s hands down to get them out of position, getting low, and finally, changing the angle to knock them off balance.
- Frame Escape – We’re practicing the frame escape this week, a technique that can be used to escape side control or half guard. We’ll look at different ways to react and change hand positioning depending on what the uki does. This class is a great compliment to the Fundamentals theme of maintaining side control. Try to get both in this week!
Kickboxing – Push Kicks/Teeps
The push kick is a valuable tool in kickboxing and Muay Thai, used for distance control. The “teep,” which is considered the foot jab, is used just like a normal jab, to find range, disrupt an opponent’s rhythm and to keep space. In order to properly throw a push kick, make sure to fully extend the striking leg and to push with the hips to generate power! This week, we will focus on good push kick mechanics and learning to combine our hands with our push kicks.
Fitness Challenge: Plyo Lunges and Plank-to-Push-Up
Muay Thai – Kick Defense
This week we focus on the various ways to defend kicks (low kicks, round kicks, push kicks) based on various stances. Depending on which stance you find yourself in (50/50 weighted stance or 70/30 weighted back stance) the defense, and the counter will be different. We will look at blocks, checks, and catches of these kicks, and the specific counters that follow.
Kids – Showing Respect
We’ll continue to talk about manners this week, focusing on showing respect.
BJJ
- Little Tigers – We’ll continue to practice our solid base, incorporating the Base Battle game into other combinations.
- Tigers – This week we’re practicing the basic collar choke from behind, as well as a standing defense of the guillotine choke.
- Advanced Tigers – We’ll be looking at a hook sweep into the guard, as well as a front choke from mount.
Muay Thai
7-9 year olds will be working on blocking hooks to the head and body, and countering after the block. The 10-13 year olds will practice push (teep) kicks.
Announcements
- Congrats to Tony Sims for a huge UFC debut! Going up a weight class, and knocking out the much larger opponent…sure is a great start to what looks to be a great UFC career! Good luck to all of the ETC BJJ competitors that will be heading out to the IBJJF American Nationals in Las Vegas this coming weekend! They’ve all been putting in work and we know they’ll give it their all when it’s time to compete!
Thoughts
Thoreau once thought the moon was larger over the United States than over the Old World, the sky bluer, the stars brighter, the thunder louder, the rivers longer, the mountains higher, the prairies vaster, and he mystically concluded that the spirit of man in America should be larger and more expansive “else why was America discovered?” Thoreau was wrong, and Thoreau was right. There is no value in life except what you choose to place upon it, and no happiness in any place except what you bring to it yourself.
