Fundamentals – Top of Side Control

  • Rear Bear Hug Defense – Under Arms from Behind – Last week we looked at how to get out of the bear hug if our partner is grabbing over our arms. This week we will be looking at how to escapes the bear hug if our partner is grabbing us under our arms. Because we a more free to use our arms in this position it makes fighting it off slightly easier. We will look at how to use our hands and hip position to break their grips, and escape to a superior position.
  • Side Control Arm Attacks – Maintaining side control and americana/armbar/kimura combinationWhen you have someone in side control your top priority is always to maintain the position. Even if you are naturally small superior body position will make you feel very heavy. Once we all learn some basic strategies to maintain the position, we will start looking at isolating the far side arm to attack the americana, straight armbar, and kimura.

Intermediate

  • Drills: Guard pull to anaconda guard sweep, smash pass to mount, knee slide to side control, side control to mount
  • Takedown: Guard Pull
  • Ground: Attacking the Mount

Remember, all intermediate classes start with a hard drilling session. Guard pull to anaconda guard sweep, smash pass to mount, knee slide to side control, side control to mount. Please watch the video below for a detailed look at these drills. On the ground, we are studying how to attack the mount using the a variety of chokes and armbars.

Kickboxing – Leg Kicks

This week in KB 1, we look at attacking the legs of our opponent, using the outside low kick and the inside low kick. These two kicks are designed to attack the lead leg of our opponent and cause damage, which in turn with slow our opponent down, and opens up another level of our offense (head, body, legs). We will also look at the basic defense for low kicks, by “checking,” and how to counter and return properly.

Muay Thai – Long Knees and Zone 2 Weapons

This week in Muay Thai, we will focus on the long knee (Khao) from Zone 2. We will look at how to set our long knees up from boxing range, as well as how to counter boxing with strong knees up the middle. We will also explore the concept of “marching” to deliver knees and controlling our opponent’s guard with our hands to steer them into our knees!

Facing Failure and Setbacks

One of the most difficult barriers we face in athletics, business, and in life is the fear of failure. Failure and setbacks are an unavoidable and inevitable part of the journey towards success. The most successful people are the ones who possess a high tolerance for failure. Everyone has heard how Michael Jordan was moved to the JV squad his first year of high school, how Edison failed over 10,000 times before he succeeded in building the light bulb. Although, these stories are commonly told to inspire, the message is valid and important. If you have never failed at anything in your life, let me save you the suspense….you will eventually fail at something, and experience a setback of some kind. What is important is that from failure, you learn a lesson, and use what you learn from that lesson to move toward success. As Paulo Coelho says in his excellent book The Alchemist, “The trick to life is falling down seven times, and getting up eight.”
