If you’ve ever been interested in learning Olympic Weightlifting, 11:00 AM on Saturday January 14th is the perfect time to give it a try! Coach Wes Martin of our CrossFit program will hold an Olympic Weightlifting clinic at CrossFit ETB. Wes is a USA Weightlifting certified instructor, and runs the Olympic Weightlifting program at Easton. Under his guidance, a new Oly cycle starts every 13 weeks, and during that time, students learn and polish the technique for the two Olympic lifts: the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk. These weightlifting movements are the components of Olympic Games competition, and both involve quickly lifting a weighted barbell from the ground to an overhead position. They are common in CrossFit WODs, and require a great deal of practice to perfect.
Because the Snatch and Clean and Jerk are very technical movements, sometimes performed at heavy weights, executing them safely is of utmost importance. We’re lucky to have a great team of CrossFit coaches, for whom safe weightlifting techniques are a priority. If you’ve ever taken a CrossFit class where barbell movements were part of the WOD, you’ve seen the fundamentals of safe technique. However, since WOD programming is constantly varied and we’re not getting these reps every day, sometimes improvement comes slowly. The Olympic Weightlifting program is great for anyone who wants to undertake a more in-depth study of these movements and ramp up their strength and power. This program is open to members in any discipline, you don’t have to be a CrossFit student.
If getting stronger or trying something new is on your list of New Year’s resolutions, come check out Coach Wes’ Olympic Weightlifting clinic! It’s just $25 for two hours of instruction, and if you decide afterwards that you’d like to get in on the next class cycle, your clinic fee will be subtracted from your Oly fee.
