CrossFit for Rayn and BBQ

Our very first in-house CrossFit competition was a huge success. Athletes from ETC Denver and ETC Boulder participated in a series of WODs and floaters, with events scaled for various levels of experience. After the competition, everyone enjoyed some barbecue, South Mouth wings, and potluck sides. The event raised $1,500 for the Moorer family of ETC Denver whose daughter Rayn is struggling with a number of serious medical issues. Thank you everyone for your donations!

Instructor Highlight

Robert Garrison
Coach Robert started boxing at age 16 and began competing at 21 while in the U.S. Navy. He has fought in over 40 amateur fights including the Golden Gloves. He teaches boxing at 5:30 PM every Friday at ETC Boulder, and is also available for private coaching.
From Robert:
Having taught boxing for 20+ years, I can tell you I truly enjoy what I do.  I offer private training, semi-private double-ups and group classes. You will burn an easy 500 calories in my class while learning proper footwork, punch combinations and defensive movement that includes bob/weave and slipping drills. The benefits of boxing are many – the most important is having fun while learning self defense, releasing tension and frustration, improving coordination and increasing balance. And of course, it’s an amazing cardio and strength training workout all at the same time.
The main reason I enjoy what I do so much is that I honestly like people, of all ages and abilities – male and female, kids to retirees. Nothing excites me more than exposing people to the joy and benefits of boxing! What’s important to me as a teacher  is having my students reach their full potential, both mentally and physically.
Boxing is a very important foundation for other martial arts such as kickboxing and Muay Thai. It’s critical that you learn proper punch technique and footwork before you layer in kicks and elbows. Boxing allows you to begin to build your overall balance and coordination when you are just starting out or you want to improve your overall performance. What I emphasize most is keeping your hands up and your eye on your opponent. I will analyze your technique and customize my approach based on your strengths and weaknesses to maximize your performance in a way that is fun and rewarding. You will always finish my session feeling proud of yourself.
Testimonials and Comments from Students/Clients

Robert’s boxing class quickly became a favorite of mine. Even though I was a complete beginner to boxing, he immediately made me feel at ease with his friendly personality and patience as I learned the basics.  His class focused, not only the punches, but also taught us technique, footwork, stances, how to gauge your distance and how to move to avoid your opponent. His instructions were always clear and he made it easy to learn new combos. During all of our drills, he always walked around to give instruction to each individual student and helped correct any mistakes he saw. He reinforced the skills we were learning through constructive feedback. Robert was really engaged and thoroughly committed to helping all of his students learn as much as they could, each and every class, which is what kept me coming back. Robert is a very talented instructor. Thank you Robert for showing me how fun boxing can be!”

“Robert was the standout instructor for me at the gym – my clear favorite. There’s a lot of technique in boxing – from a snappy jab to a foot pivot, but Robert demonstrated and explained the reasoning behind every movement. His instructions were always explicit, which helped us maximize our punches while minimizing the chances of injury. Even in a large class, Robert always made time to give personalized instructions. He would fine-tune the more experienced  students or emphasize correct movements to the newer ones. Every student would receive encouragement and advice from Robert as his passion for the sport was undeniable and his enthusiasm motivated my participation. I had a great training experience with Robert and I would enthusiastically encourage anyone interested in boxing to try out his class.”   -David

“With his exuberant personality and energy, Robert is very motivating to me. His professionalism mixed with the way he cares about people, plus his massage therapy knowledge, makes him a multi-dimensional trainer. When I work with Robert consistently, I’ve seen really dramatic results. He helped me reshape my body, from my posture to my muscle balance.”   -Josh
