BJJ

Fundamentals – Maintaining the Mount

  • Front Bear Hug Defense – This week we’re going to look at defending a bear hug from the front. Whether your attacker is grabbing you over or under your arms, the first step is to create space so you can get the pummel. Then you can set up a takedown.
  • Maintaining the Mount, Front Chokes, and Armbar – We will now be maintaining and attacking from mount. We’ve been working on defense, so this will be tougher than if it was against someone who does not know Jiu Jitsu. Focus on calmly being able to maintain so we can recognize our options to effectively attack. Position first, then submission!

Intermediate – Omoplata

  • Mid-Level Single-Leg Takedown – The takedown we’ll be practicing this week involves controlling one of your partner’s legs, and using it as leverage to knock them off balance.
  • Omoplata – Soneca Style – The omoplata we’re working on this week is named for Helio Soneca, one of Professor Easton’s teachers. We set it up from closed guard, and it’s a bit complex, so get ready to get technical!

Kickboxing – Leg Kicks

The leg kick, or low kick, is a kick designed to attack the thighs of your opponent. The kick is thrown like a round kick, but with a downward trajectory to the target. Leg kicks are cumulative strikes; they wear on the opponent as the fight goes on. This week we focus on the outside and inside low kick!

Fitness Challenge: Burpees and Seated Leg Extensions

Muay Thai – Elbows

This week we focus on the sneakiest weapon in Thai Boxing: the elbow. We will look at a variety of different elbow strikes, when to throw elbows in an exchange and where to throw them in the clinch. We will also look at staying safe from this weapon in the clinch and how to neutralize someone who throws a lot of elbows.

Kids – Taking Responsibility

This week we’re continuing our theme of building good habits. We’re going to be talking about taking responsibility for our actions. This means not making excuses or blaming others, but owning up when we’ve made a mistake, and taking steps to fix it.

BJJ

  • Little Tigers – We’re going to continue this week with our mount drills and games. Get ready for more Bulldozer, Spider Kid, and Shark Bite!
  • Tigers – This week we’re continuing our practice of the back sweep, torreando pass, getting into mount from side control, the push hips escape, and setting up the armbar from guard.

Muay Thai

Footwork is an essential component of any striker’s repertoire. We’re continuing with our footwork unit this week, practicing moving around the bags as we would an opponent–-maintaining a stable stance, and staying on the balls of our feet.

Announcements

  • Congratulations to all of the ETC BJJ competitors, friends, family, and coaches that made it out on Saturday to face the competition. We won the overall trophy once again and we couldn’t do it without each and every one of you!

Thoughts

Don’t let your consistency die. Don’t make excuses for not training…make time for what you know you need to do! Make your word law with yourself so that you can know what it is to mean what you say!
The first and greatest victory is to conquer yourself.
To be conquered by yourself is of all things most shameful and vile. ~ Plato
