Fundamentals – Headlock
- Standing Headlock and Punch Defense – By far one of the most important lessons in the fundamentals curriculum. From a self-defense point of view, this is one of the most likely situations one might encounter in a street altercation.
- Top of Headlock and Armbar – Learning to control the top is paramount. Once everyone is showing good control, we’ll move on to the armbar from the top of headlock.
Intermediate – Sprawl and Half Guard
- Sprawl – This week is sprawl. Students begin with going through the basics of how to sprawl without a partner, this is also a good way to get your heart rate up. We’ll emphasize the importance of hitting the hips to the mat and getting up as quickly as possible. Once everyone has the basic form down, we can start working on doing in partners with one person shooting. We will spend a while on this technique and it is a good time to continue to working on shots and wrestling stance.
- Bottom of Half Guard – This is a super important position to learn how to control. Distance and framing is a absolutely necessity in jiu jitsu and the half guard gives you a great starting point for these concepts.
Kickboxing – Elbows
This week in kickboxing, we will go over the short-range weapon in the elbow. The elbow can be used to “cut” or “spear” the opponent, depending on how you throw it. We will look at proper elbow technique and then how to properly set our elbows up and cover distance from punch range to elbow range.
Muay Thai – Lefty vs. Righty
One of the most classic match ups in combat sports: orthodox vs southpaw. The majority of fighters prefer the orthodox stance, so it’s important to know how to face an opposite-stance fighter. Many tactics that normally work against an orthodox fighter will not work against a lefty! We will look at basic offensive strategies, basic defense, and countering the lefty attacks.
Motivation vs. Dedication
It’s important to know the difference between motivation and dedication. Motivation is great, but it’s a very temporary feeling. Everyone, at some point in their lives is motivated to do something. All of you, if you are newer, are probably motivated right now to be here. Dedication, on the other hand, is different. It is a deep-seated promise we silently make to ourselves. It’s a promise that sometimes is hard to keep, but that is why people who are successful are always dedicated. To be dedicated means to keep pursuing your goal even when you are no longer motivated. The days when you’re tired, or it’s raining out, and the last thing you want to do is come in here and train, that is where dedication separates itself from motivation. I challenge everyone in here to make that promise to yourself, and to live a healthier and more rewarding life because of it.
