Fundamentals – Punch Defense

  • Standing Punch Defense – In Jiu-Jitsu, it’s important that we understand how to bock punches correctly, and how to close the gap between us and our opponent. Without this knowledge, we may be overconfident in our ability to properly defend ourselves!
  • Punch Defense from the Guard – Again, it is super important that we have some idea of how to handle when our opponent is striking. We looked at what to do when we are standing. Now let’s look at what happens when we are on the bottom of guard and the top person wants to strike.

Intermediate – Single Legs and Back Defense

  • Single-Leg Takedown – Depending on which foot we have forward, and which foot our opponent has forward (this can be controlled with movement as well), this tells us which shot is available. When we have a “mirrored” stance, the single leg is the go to shot. We will break this down as well as a couple of different options for finishing.
  • Back Defense – Now that we’ve had the time to look at the attacks, lets focus on defending when someone’s on our back! The two basic ideas are escaping on the side with the arm over our shoulder, as well as the other side too (seatbelt grip).

Kickboxing – Angles of Attack

The goal of combat sports is to hit and not get hit! This week, we will focus on different ways of “stepping off the line” to avoid getting hit after we hit our opponents. A good rule of thumb is to step to the side you finish on. So, if you finish with your lead hand, step to your lead side. If you finish with your rear hand, exit to your rear side. This week, we drill the pivot step to the lead side and the slide step to our rear side. Get off the tracks!

Muay Thai – Elbows

Elbows this week in Muay Thai: the shortest, yet deadliest weapon in the Thai Boxing arsenal. We will look at a number of different elbow techniques, and then move to setting these up and learning how to successfully close the distance to land elbows, and then look at our options after we land an elbow on the opponent.
