Fundamentals – Headlock Defense

  • Standing Headlock Defense – We’ll look at what to do if you’re caught in a headlock while standing, focusing on keeping yourself safe from punches and throws, and then taking your partner to the ground.
  • Headlock Escapes – We’ll look at using the pendulum, hooking the leg to push, then pull, hooking the head and turning to all fours; don’t worry the video will make this easy to understand. Having spent the past few weeks looking at taking our partner to the mat from a standing headlock and looking at escaping side control with the pummel, we will now add in escaping the headlock from bottom. We’ll show how this can work off a failed pummel when you try to escape side control.

Intermediate –

  • Sprawl – This is week three of the sprawl. You should start feeling comfortable with this movement by now. Because of this, tying it into your wrestling stance and shots should be the main focus of your drilling. Finally, working with partners on shot sprawl drills will start to be an important part of your training.
  • Mount Top – Learning to maintain a position is always first in line. Secondly, you will learn to submit. Once we’ve practices techniques for maintaining, we’ll move on to the front choke, and then the armbar option if your partner defends the choke.

Kickboxing – Footwork and Creating Angles after Combinations

The goal of combat sports is to hit and not get hit! This week, we will focus on different ways of “stepping off the line” to avoid getting hit after we hit our opponents. A good rule of thumb is to step to the side you finish on. So, if you finish with your lead hand, step to your lead side. If you finish with your rear hand, exit to your rear side. This week, we drill the pivot step to the lead side and the slide step to our rear side. Get off the tracks!

Muay Thai – Clinch Drills

This week in Muay Thai, we look at the most important, but often most under-developed of American Muay Thai arsenal’s: the clinch. Basic clinch positioning, posture, entries, attacks, and sweeps will be the focus this week. Also basic defense and escapes. Most people start out despising the clinch, because it is very helpless position if you are new to it. However, once you learn even the basics, you have a huge advantage over everyone else! Come get your reps in this week and develop strong clinch fundamentals!

On the Importance of Taking Action
“Take action. Every story you’ve ever been connected with, every leader you have ever admired, every puny little thing that you have ever accomplished is the result of taking action. You have a choice: you can either be a passive victim of circumstance, or the active hero of your own life.”
– Bradley Whitford
