The Purpose of the Gi

The Purpose of the Gi

With the popularity of MMA, no gi grappling has become very popular. Yet it is still very important to train Jiu Jitsu with a gi. Training with a gi serves a very particular purpose, and while you may not be able to wear the gi into the cage, it will definitely help your game immensely.

All About Technique

Practicing Jiu Jitsu properly requires a gi. There is no way around it. Many of the common techniques rely on the gi. From the ever popular collar chokes, to just using the sleeves and pant legs for a better grip, a gi offers plenty of ways to attack someone.

Awareness of Your Openings

Training with a gi makes you aware of all the ways you can be grabbed and manipulated. This way, you’ll be in the habit of protecting better, even when not wearing the gi. You’ll be protecting against attacks that your opponent can’t even make, thereby ensuring your defense is solid.

Your game will be more technical, and you’ll be more closely aware of any flaws in your defense. And while you may have flaws, they will not be as easy to take advantage of with no gi.

Don’t Leave Home Without It

So while many people prefer to practice no gi, it is also just as important to practice with the gi. It makes for a harder game, so when you go out in the cage, the ground game will be a little less complex than you are used to.

Hands down, training with a gi is the best way to train. And if you want the best place to train Jiu Jitsu in Boulder, Easton BJJ is the way to go. If you’re going to be the best, you need to train with the best!
