BJJ

Fundamentals – Single Leg Takedown and Guard Passing

  • Single-Leg – This takedown is just as it sounds. It is a takedown where we grab and control one of our opponent’s legs, utilizing the momentum and leverage to take them down. This takedown usually brings you to a great control position on the ground (depending on which version). Don’t miss out on this staple take down!
  • Guard Passing Under – If you cannot pass the guard, it will be difficult for you to win. This pass is a great pass to do on the ground without standing. We first open the guard, then put ourselves in position to be able to pass “over” or “under”. This week we will be focusing on passing “under” the legs to side control. Next week we will be looking at the “over” side.

Intermediate – Headlock Defense

  • Standing Headlock Defense – From a BJJ standpoint, headlocks are not good for fighting, but people will certainly use them if they are unfamiliar with this rule (most people are in this group). It is up to us to know how to escape headlocks and gain the better position, and the upper hand. This technique focuses on the standing headlock and ways to defeat it.
  • Ground Headlock Defense – This time we will take a look at the escaping the headlock from the ground. There will be several options and we need to know them all. These are not skills you want to be trying to remember when you need them. You’ll want to know immediately how to handle the headlock…if you don’t, it could be a rough situation against the wrong attacker!

Kickboxing – Reloads and Weight Distribution Principles

One of the most fundamental concepts in striking arts is the weight distribution principle. Any strike that is to be thrown with force needs to have weight behind it! Learning to properly transfer your weight from leg to leg while maintaining balance and positioning will be critical to learning how to punch and kick with power. This week we will look at using our weight properly to throw strikes, particularly throwing to strikes from the same side (lead side or rear side) in a row. Learn to transfer your weight and reload your weight in order to become a power puncher!

Muay Thai – Kick Defense and Counters

This week we focus on the different ways to defend kicks in Thai Boxing. Depending on the distance, the kick, and the opponent, we may need to use different defenses and counters. We will examine blocking, checking, trapping, and evading kicks this week and then countering back and making our opponent pay for trying to kick us!

Thoughts

The best antidote I know for worry is work. The best cure for weariness is the challenge of helping someone who is even more tired. One of the great ironies of life is this: He or she who serves almost always benefits more than he or she who is served.
