TBA 2019 Muay Thai World Expo Recap

Last month, the Easton Muay Thai competition team had the opportunity to compete at the TBA World Muay Thai Expo. This is an amateur Muay Thai tournament that draws Nak Muay (Muay Thai fighters) from across the United States and Canada, in a 3-day tournament with 900 athletes! The tournament is the biggest amateur event in the United States, and one of the biggest amateur Muay Thai events worldwide. Easton had 7 athletes competing ranging from junior novice (0-3 fights) all the way to Class A (13 + fights).

After weigh ins on Thursday, and two days of intense competition on Friday and Saturday, we had reached the tournament finals on Sunday! 5 of our 7 athletes had advanced to the finals of their brackets and would compete for the title of 2019 TBA North American Champion. After a long day of championship bouts, Easton came home with 3 new Champions! The Champions are:

  • Kristy Vu, Women’s Novice  107lbs  Champion
  • Joey Nitura, Men’s Class B 132lbs Champion
  • Pedro Meyer, Men’s Class A 186lbs Champion

We also had two of our Easton athletes receive Silver Medals as finalists in their brackets! They were:

  • Mari Nashida, Women’s 101lbs Finalist
  • Raiden Christensen, Junior Novice 147lbs Finalist

After 11 total fights at the tournament for the Easton team, the final count was 7 wins and 4 losses. The wins were hard-earned and impressive. The losses were tough, but great learning experiences for our athletes. No matter the outcome, all Easton athletes gained experience and tested themselves against some of the best Nak Muay in North America. We are proud of them for being such great representatives of Easton as well as the sport of Muay Thai!

Special thank you to coaches Matthew Bloss, Steve Eisman, and Dustin Bolinger, for making the trip to Iowa to help prepare and corner our athletes for competition. These coaches dedicated countless hours to prepare this team for the tournament. They gave 100% effort and commitment in Iowa to see that these athletes had everything they needed to succeed.

We are already looking forward to bringing another strong team to the TBA Muay Thai World Expo next year!
