James Strater-Smith

BJJ, BJJ Coach, Black Belt, Boulder, Kids

As a child, Coach James Strater-Smith dreamt of growing up to be a Ninja Turtle. Unfortunately, it soon became apparent that The Secret of the Ooze was only a movie and not a reality, so he settled for the next best thing: being a full-time martial arts practitioner and teacher.  James practiced Tae Kwon Do and kickboxing throughout his teens, and then decided to try out Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on the recommendation of a friend at the age of nineteen. He tried his first class at Easton Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Boulder and was immediately hooked.

Initially, James’ goal was to fight in Mixed Martial Arts competitions. After a couple of amateur fights, he decided that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was his true passion and decided to dedicate himself fully to the art. Since then, he has been competing extensively on the international level. He is intensely passionate about Jiu Jitsu, and tries to compete as often as possible.

James is currently the head instructor for both the kids and adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu programs at Easton Training Center Boulder. His passion for Jiu Jitsu is apparent in all of the classes that he teaches, and he seeks to share his love of the art with all of his students. James especially enjoys coaching the kids classes at ETC- watching his young students grow and mature into capable and kind adults fills him with immense pride.
