Law Enforcement Employee Gives High Praise to Arvada Instructors

Law Enforcement Employee Gives High Praise to Arvada Instructors

No matter what profession you are in, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will affect you positively on and off the mat. This Arvada school student and maximum sercurity prison guard shares his story about how BJJ and the professors at Arvada have allowed him to excell at work and defuse dangerous situations.

Dear Professor Amal Easton,

I am writing this letter to let you know my feelings about the EastonBrazilianJiuJitsuArvadaSchool. Not only is this a testimonial, but a letter of praise for the work that is done there. This letter should have been written a long time ago, but sometimes putting things like this into words is difficult. As you know, I started training at the BoulderSchool in 2004 and most of my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training has developed under Professor Nick Kline. When Professors Nick Kline and Chris Kline opened Easton Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Arvada I started training there from day one due to location and loyalty. When I did this, my training really started picking up in very good way.
As you know, my career is in law enforcement. I have worked in a jail for 13 years now. It has approximately 500 inmates and sometimes the deputies are outnumbered 48 to 1. I have spent most of my career working in the maximum security area of the jail. The inmates in this area are very difficult to deal with for a many different reasons. I have been spit on, punched, kicked, pushed, grabbed, and have even had urine and feces thrown in my direction. I have had to break up fights between inmates and had to intervene in serious medical emergencies, some resulting in death. It is physically and mentally draining. This may be hard for some to believe, but I recently realized the one thing that has pulled me through these situations is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu — especially the training experiences at the Arvada school with Professors Nick and Chris Kline and Professor Ethan Snow.

Before I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I used to get overly stressed and it showed in my diet and overall attitude. I signed up to do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a way to stay physically fit, but it turned into much more as time went on. The atmosphere that Professors Nick and Chris Kline and Professor Ethan Snow create during training and classes is second to none. The confidence that they have given to me has extended beyond the mat. This confidence comes from being physically and mentally fit for whatever comes my way. I have used Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques that I have learned in Arvada to gain control of situations and protect myself. But the most important thing is that I have defused bad situations without using force to gain control. In Arvada, Professors Nick and Chris Kline and Professor Ethan Snow have taught me to remain calm and not to panic when I am in bad positions on the mat. When I remain calm, I can see solutions to bad positions. This extends to bad situations at the jail. If I stay calm and don’t panic in a bad situation that situation will usually end in a positive way for everyone involved. I am also a defensive tactics instructor for my department and have improved how I teach by watching how things are done in Arvada.

I owe Professors Nick and Chris Kline and Professor Ethan Snow a lot. I still have so much Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to learn and to improve on, but I believe I am in good hands. If you have anyone interested in signing up who is in law enforcement, please show them this letter. It might get them to sign up.

Thanks,

Chris Reiss
