Kickboxing – Elbows

This week in Kickboxing, we are working on our elbows! Elbows are a dangerous close-range (zone 1) weapon used in Muay Thai. We will be looking at several different types of elbow strikes and then how to properly set them up and score big!

Muay Thai – Round Kick Defense

We will follow last week’s focus of round kick offense with how to properly defend the middle kick this week! We will use your 5 common types of defense: block, redirect, catch, evade, and intercept, and see how they apply to the round kick in particular. We will also examine rules and scoring as they pertain to the defenses of the kick. Pick up your blocks, this week!

Kids – Black Belt Partners

“What does that mean/ What does it mean to be a black belt partner?” (Helping your partners earn their black belt) “For those of us who have been training for a long time, it’s easy to forget how tough this sport can be, especially in the beginning. Anything you’re trying for the first time is gonna be tough, but we are BATTLING in here, and it’s not easy.” “Even though we’re on a challenging path, I KNOW that every single one of you could make it to your black belt if you put the time in. And I know that’s true because you’re surrounded by a team; surrounded by a FAMILY that WONT LET YOU FAIL.” “Every coach, every teammate, every person in this gym is a part of your mission to get you to your black belt. And so you have to be a part of helping EVERY other teammate get THEIR black belt. EVERYTHING you do with your partners will either be pushing them towards that black belt, or pushing them to quit.” “When you see a new face and walk right past them, ignoring them… where is that pushing them?” (Quit) “When coach pairs you with somebody off the wall and you go ‘awwwww!’… where’s that pushing them?” (Quit) “When somebody wrestles with you and finishes crying… where’s that pushing?” (Quit) “So give me some ways I can help push my partner towards their black belt??” (be a leader, help them with the move, remind them to focus, wrestle hard, be nice) ***Special note: When a kid says some form of “be nice” (meaning not to hurt them when training) be sure to say something like “absolutely, but does that mean I baby them? NO. Babying them will not help them get any better, any tougher, or any closer to their black belt.” “Having this amazing team around us is what makes our sport and this gym so special, but it’s only amazing because you guys make it amazing. Be that friendly face that new students are happy to see. Be that spark that ignites the Jiu-jitsu fire in your teammates. Be a black belt partner!

Thoughts – The Importance of Self-Awareness

A discrepancy between how you think you are perceived by others and how you are actually viewed exists in most of us. It is important to be aware of this discrepancy–at least in the abstract. We should all strive to be more self-aware, and pay closer attention to how our actions may affect and influence others. In doing so, we can aim to be better people in the world.
